How profitable is Telecom industry today and what business models work as home setups?

Hi everyone,

in other thread I got reccomendation as a Telecom business for investment.

Since I am not really experienced in Telecom industry (but I am in IT and Infrastructure so it would not be an issue to configure different environments), what are business models in this industry that are working today as setups from home and with resonable investments (20-100k) ?

Really crowded niche and competition is huge players. Hard to break into for individuals
 
I'd probably look into VoIP, SMS services, or telecom software instead of trying to build physical infrastructire. Those are much easier to run from home.

are they profitable, VoIP and SMS services are also offered by large telecom companies :) ?

They can be profitable if you target a specific market, competing head to head with the big telecom companies is a different story.
 
To enter this industry, you need to build a large-scale business; it's very difficult to gain traction as an individual. Instead, you could explore simpler services, such as those currently developing in artificial intelligence or AI technology.

The technical side is only one part of it understanding the market and customers is just as important.
 
A test run can help you understand the industry before committing the full budget real customer feedback will reveal what actually works.

If you don't have any knowledge about it, my advice is not to do it, otherwise you will suffer a major failure...
 
With that small of a budget, your only real option would probably be starting a small WISP and targeting a local community. A neighborhood, HOA, campground, apartment complex, etc.

That said, it's going to be a tough battle. Nearly every one of your potential customers already has internet that works well enough. Why would they leave their decades-old provider and go with some no-name startup?

If you're targeting an underserved area, that balance changes drastically, you're now the only one selling "internet that doesn't suck". But even then, you're still an unproven newbie in a field of ancient giants, and even one competitor running new lines could wipe out your entire advantage.
