How powerful are backlinks?

If a backlink is available from a previously published article relevant to our topic, which would you prefer to publish: a complete guest post or a backlink from the existing article? Which type of backlink would be more powerful?

High quality Backlinks is most important factor for rankings.

The existing one.

It is called niche edit or link insertion.

It has advantages over guest in that it's already indexed, aged and might even have direct backlinks pointing at it. Ideally it is also ranking and getting organic traffic.

Backlinks are powerful. I'm not a marketing expert, but we have others here in Thread who are much more advanced but have good-quality backlinks.

Overall, I would say that direct links are better for the short term since (as already mentioned) an indexed and high DA page will boost you faster.
On the other hand, (no expert knowledge), I could assume that with a guest post, the long-term effect is higher because you can put in targetted anchor text and long-term visibility if (in my case) a topic is not so saturated - I would prefer maybe a guest post because in this Industry I am working, this specific topic is not so present but still falls in the section of IT / Technology.
So I think if I'm one of the first to post about this - or there are not many articles about this topic on their page, this could help more and also give some social shares.

But overall, I'm not an expert, and I guess it depends more on the strategy and how you want to target.

Articles published some time ago may have already accumulated backlinks, social shares, and traffic, increasing their authority. A link from such an article can pass more link juice value to your site.

I'd go for the existing article link if it’s already indexed and getting traffic. Those backlinks usually have better link juice because they’re coming from a page with some age
