LOL, the first computer I ever used was locked away in some back room and you had to access it from a terminal in the computer lab. Offline data storage was still accomplished with punch cards.

Design the blueprints, etching the boards, drill thausends of holes, welding the parts.
And the the _really_ funny moments when connecting to power and an Electrolytic condenser was wrong welded to + and -

So just as you say, that puts me about 10 years behind you.
Kudos to you for having built a computer yourself especially at that time. +rep given for that. I didn't build one myself, but it would have been easier for me than you because by my time DIY kit computers were available. :cool2:
While in highschool the prefab kit computers like the Altair were available by mail order and not long after I graduated, Woz started selling his first Apple kits. I didn't need to build one from a kit though because a few months before I got out of the military IBM had introduced the PC. So once competition brought the price down to just a couple thousand bucks, I was able to buy a PC XT Turbo Clone. Heck I even got one with a RGB color monitor. lol

I have built a lot of computers since then, but that's a different thing. Even the kit computers required you to solder all the ic chips, relays, diodes, etc. onto the boards yourself. All I've had to do for building a modern PC isn't so much building since all you really have to do is buy the parts and plug them into each other.
