How often should Google position change?

I have a lot of silly questions to ask around here but I'm still new to SEO and working real hard to rank my first affiliate website. I started link building around Oct 13th doing manual linking across forums, web 2.0s, blog commenting, and a few directories trying to get at least a few links made every day. I use GSA to make tier 2 backlinks to any orphan web2.0 sites I've worked on and I've also posted three blogs to my website with one of them being an infographic that got 90+ shares on FB. I realize it's only been a month and pretty much every main keyword I was trying to rank for is sitting in the top 50 with most ranking on page 3, but I feel like they haven't really moved in the last two weeks and it's a little discouraging. SEO is a game of patience, but I'm wondering how often my keywords should be moving up the ranks? Even if it's only a spot or two at a time at least I would be seeing progress, but right now I just feel that the keywords are stuck where they are...

Could I be messing up my white hat backlinking somehow or am I just not being patient enough? I feel it's like weighing myself every day, maybe I should only be checking my rankings once a week??

If you are building links from domains with authority and trust, and are being careful with the anchor text that you use, then I wouldn't worry too much about it at the moment. You do need to have some patience. But depending on how competitive the keywords are that you are targeting, you may need some stronger links eventually than what you are currently building. Which will probably either involve creating great content for your site and conducting outreach, or going down the PBN route.
 
These things take time. I've had links up for months now and they dance up and down 1-2 spaces each day. It's constantly changing.
 
no one can tell you when it changes. but when it changes you will know it!
 
It all depends on the keywords you are targeting. Competitive keywords require more effort and time consecutively. Also, you have to make sure you have a perfect on-page optimization.
 
the change is not in our hand, some time it takes month, some it changes sooner than you expect
 
Well, sincerely, I have a bit of a problem with your link building strategy. You made mention of web directories and web 2.0. Please DO NOT submit your site to paid directories. Do not over use web 2.0 sites. One fact you should also remember is that link building is not as it used to be prior to this time. Penguin has given a RED to all of those. What I will advice you do is focus on your content.

Create VERY high quality ever-green content that will attract visitors to your site. Take advantage of the power of social marketing (If you need an e-book on that I will be more than happy to provide). Submit your site to reputable niche resource websites (type: inurl:"your niche + links" into Google and you will get those).

In fact, there are many legitimate ways to get VALUABLE links that Google will love. Do not relent however. Just PM if you need those.

I will also be launching my IM blog on January 1st 2015. I will let you know when I do.

Worth noting, both for OP and anybody else asking a similar question. Here's what John Mueller said in a recent Google Webmasters office hours (paraphrased):

The ranking algorithms are automated processes, there's not one person that will decide one day to move your site higher or lower in the search results. Since these processes are scheduled and ran automatically there's bound to be fluctuations day to day. Especially since Google takes so many things in to account when generating their SERPs & Indexes.
 
every second maybe, you must ask the employee :p. but no major issue for short rotation
 
It depends not on quantity of backlinks you made, but how fast googlebot reaching the pages with your links. You can actually speed up this process by adding page link to google's addurl or posting a tweet with the link
 
SERPs are pretty much dynamic, they keep changing quite often and as soon as your links are indexed, you can expect to see keyword movements. What do you do to index your links?
 
Buy a rank tracker subscription and let it track the rank for ya. You'll get warnings when the SERPs move.
 
Its still a mystery lolz. No one knows when google change their policies.
 
Google would update the SERPs in real time and constantly, as soon as new information is retrieved from its crawling bots.:)

This guy is wrong. Web 2.0s work wonders. As long as they are quality and handmade with unique content you are fine.
 
If you are in the competetive niche, the higher positions you get , the slower position bumps you will see. The fastest are jumps from top 1000 to top 100 then to top 50, top 20 and so on. It usually slows down naturally what is reasonable due to the competition.
 
It depends on many factors, including your SEO, your niche, your competition, commercial value of your keyword, etc.

I have keywords that only change in rankings like once every few months (both my site and my competitors sites). On the other hand, some of my other niches that I target see changes almost instantly after the backlinks are indexed. The key is to be patient and know that as long as you're doing everything right, the rankings will come.
