How much would you sell this domain for

I'm interested in a domain name, which has been registered by somebody else. The person who has registered the domain has said they are willing to sell the domain but have asked me to make an offer.

The domain is 4 letters, which do not spell a word, the letters can only be used as an acronym. The domain has been registered for 14 years, from research I can see that since 2004 it has had a placeholder page apart from for several months around 2011, where there was a very basic page for computer services.

This domain is quite significant to the project I am working on and is my first choice, but I do have alternatives. to me it is worth between $50 - $80, but I do not know how much I should offer the seller.

Should I just tell them I am willing to pay less than 100$, tell them why, or ask in what region they would sell?

I would make a low ball offer at around $40, then he'll say no and you wait a sec then say fine, $80, if not I'll move on. That's how I bought a domain recently at $500, instead of $900 which he was asking for.

I would sell it for low to mid $xxx.

It's not a cheap domain name....but it depends on what you want to do with it. Personally I wouldn't pay jack shit for it, but others could. As always with domains, it depends on what those 4 letters mean and how bad you want it.

Start low, and wait for a response. Usually, the value of a domain depends on what the potential buyer wants to do with it

Well if the guy has had it for over 14 years he is probably going to at least want to make back the money that he spent on "keeping" the domain. Depending on what domain provider he bought it through calculate a rough estimate of how much he spent.

He probably knows he won't get another offer for this anytime soon otherwise he would have sold it already.

As mentioned by another member, the value of a domain really comes down to the meaning and how badly you want/need it. If this domain is really important for your project/business, then you'll pay more for it compared to someone who doesn't have a specific need for it.
