I have a legal web site with very little content but that is focused on my local area. I've done some decent work backlinking it and it's at the top of the organic results for a bunch of local keywords (MyCity lawyer, MyCity attorney, etc).

I've been writing a sales letter and was going to send it out to all the lawyers in my area in a few days. I want to lease it out, either getting several firms to pay each month to be listed on the main page, or to lease it out to one firm for more money.

Tonight I got an email from a guy at a big personal injury and disability firm (more than a dozen offices in my state and commercials on TV all the time). The email said, "I don't know how much it would cost to add a link on your website. But I would like to."

How much should I ask for? I've never done offline before and put up this site on spec, so I have no idea what to ask for.

It will depend on how many visitors you have per day and how many are interested in his service .
What I will do is to set up a banner or a link for him for a flat rate( around 200$) for the first month and depending on the results I will fix my price :)

If this is your first client, then make it a special price for him/her. For example, $3 or $5 per month.
 
Depends on the traffic you have etc, but I'd try 1K/mo (min)

For the noob that said $3-5/mo it should be more than that PER CLICK!!!!

Introductory special of $30-50 a month for a link on the main page plus his own "details" page for his business. Then review how much traffic you're getting and sending him and adjust the price accordingly. If he complains after the first month because he's not getting traffic, lower the price.

Lol wonder how many K$ he makes even if he gets 1 client so thats just absurd.The price will depend on how much traffic you have. But if you do the front page exclusive ask good price for it. If hes into TV ads and such he has money to pay for it.

This is the sort of crap that is taking this forum down, why does everyone think so damn small, get it into your head that we're not talking about some ass clown from India looking to advertise his $1.5 Wordpress widget on your site.

The guy is a Lawyer with multiple offices and ads on TV. This means,

A) he is not averse to spending $$$ on advertising,
B) he knows how to convert
C) his LCV's probably near 10K (personal injury type clients)

Do the maths.

then, charge him 500. he says no, no biggie. try 3 more. they all say no, then maybe try lower. but hell really, you could even get 1k a month possibly. 1 client for them could be huge. make sure to talk about how much traffic your site gets. tell him for "exclusivity" its 1 or 1.5k. to share with 3 others, 500. or something like that. theres a whole thread about this in the offlline section. super busy sorry hope you can find it. goodluck

That's why I said "introductory special." It's an unproven website with an unknown ability to send leads, so most media buyers would be leery of spending too much on a spot. Once traffic has been tracked for a month, the OP can make a better determination of what it's actually worth.

It's also possible that the OP's site doesn't have any real traffic, and wouldn't send any leads. Thus the value of the spot would in reality be closer to zero. By the OP's admission it's basically undeveloped. It's impossible to say without seeing the site.

keywords "MyCity lawyer" and "MyCity attorney," if you truly are near the TOP of the rankings (1-2-3 area) should be bringing in lots and lots of highly targeted leads -- ESPECIALLY in this niche. who searches for a lawyer when they DON'T immediately need one? these people are ready to find and sign. if he truly is a personal injury lawyer, as a poster above said, those cases are worth EVEN MORE to him. the fact that you mention they have dozens of locations also means that they are doing a LOT of business. a lot of personal injury business = MORE MONEY THAN YOU CAN CONCEPTUALIZE. AND THEY LIKE TO SPEND IT ON OTHER ADS!!

again, this depends on traffic and city size. but if this is a medium-large city or bigger, i would offer full exclusivity along with several favorable testimonials, whatever sales page he wants it to be -- for $30k/month on a six-month lease, and let them haggle me down to 20k-25k, maybe 3 months. if they don't accept, move on to another firm and try again. if you present yourself as a real businessman and not some schlubby basement nerd this price is not only achievable but perfectly reasonable based on what kind of money you can generate for them. what's the worst that can happen? they all reject you? well, come back for a second round -- they'll feel HAPPY to pay you $15k or $10k a month. MAYBE YOU'LL EVEN HAVE TO SETTLE FOR $5k! :eek:

Most small businesses are usually willing to pay about $1000 or more per month to get their site to the top of Google for their local searches. But for a lawyer site, it's safe to assume he's making WAY more money than the typical mom and pop small business, and that the competition is WAY higher.

If you look at the CPC for lawyer searches, some of those keywords are worth more than $50+ per click. That should give you an idea of how valuable the term is. If all you are doing is giving the guy a small link in the sidebar amongst other links, it probably is not very valuable, but if you are dedicating the whole site to him and sending a huge amount of traffic, I'd say it's worth at least $5000-$10,000 per month
 
Here's some more info:

MyCity is a small city (less than 100,000) about a 20 minute drive outside of a much larger city in the northeastern US.

My site is currently #3 for "MyCity Lawyer" (with or without the "") and between 1 and 3 for about a dozen similar keywords. However, the traffic is VERY light - around 200 uniques/mo.

You know how every area has a personal injury firm whose commercials are all over TV? That's the firm that contacted me. The guy who emailed me is their web design & marketing guy, according to his title.

Are you kidding me? 200 leads/month is A LOT dude.

Just find out how much profit a lawyer can make from 1 client and you can easily ajust your price according to it.

This is some basic math...
You need to know how many of your leads convert and you're almost done with your pricing.

At last, someone in this thread who is talking sense. These are lawyers, and even better in your case a personal injury lawyer, who love spending ridiculous money on advertising.

You've stated you get around 200 uniques a month. Make sure the lawyer understands these are laser targeted leads and will convert well for him. I would then offer him advertising exclusivity. Tell him your currently dealing with a number of lawyers in the area who all want to advertise and it's a headache setting up banners and chasing payments etc, so you will offer them exclusivity if they can commit to say a minimum 6 month contract but shoot for 12 months. At your stated 200 uniques a month I'd want NO LESS than $5000 per month, anything less than this and your selling yourself short.

I would first meet with the attorney, and find out what they are spending in advertising now - local papers, yellow pages, online, etc.

I would get them to sign up for your own site, but also try and show them the value of their own site getting higher rankings! Now you've got 2 sources of revenue.

Come across as a consultant, not a sales person. I do local SEO for a lot of companies. I give them all a free report on seo, that I have published.

They love that! Show them that you can get their site much higher google ranks. I use Market Samurai for this. Best investment I've ever made.

The days of charging $2-$5k a month are gone.....I disagree with "Think Bigger", as we are still in a major recession....Think Big later, after you have a bunch of clients! And clients who will start to refer you.

Try $750 a month for your site and another $750 a month to do SEO on theirs. Also, try and target some Bankruptcy attorneys, as their business is booming! For leads: minimum, $100 bucks a pop!

I disagree...as others have mentioned in this thread...IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE NICHE! This is a BIG SPENDER niche! I think you should get $2k/month (at least) for a site like this.

I am not sure if Mike (above) is saying leads in your attorney niche should be $100/ea or specifically for "bankruptcy attorney". At $100 a pop x 200 leads then you should be charging $20,000/month (do the math!). Even if a regular attorney lead is "only" worth $20/ea...200 x $20 = $4,000/mth.

Don't sell yourself short! I would err on the HIGH side to start with. You can always come down in your price. But you will not be able to go back and tell him "Oops, I meant $5,000/mth, not $500."

Great point! Lawyers are used to paying big money for leads and advertising, because they can afford it.
