How much to make a site like ebay??

I was just wondering how much money would it cost to make a site like ebay. I know it would be easily in the thousands but i just wanted to know because i'm really pissed of how much money ebay steals from the seller. 9% of the price plus the other fees. It really does take almost half my profit at times. One day i want to make a site to compete with ebay. How much would it cost just to make the site. Advertising and shit later lol. By the way anyone else had a thought like this? Ebay is getting worse and worse everyday

you want a site to compete with ebay???? then i would say you would need millions of dolars to advertise your site....
 
The smart thing would be to build a site that targets the item you sell.
Then build out from there.
Would be easier then you think. :)

I'll do it for very cheap as I already have the scripts, all it would take is some hosting and a domain, then you'd do the advertising from there.
I recently set up a classifieds ads site for someone locally to me (took me 5 minutes, not done graphics or anything yet).

I would suggest creating an auction site based on a category or even a micro category, the build up the traffic to that site so that you can target buyers and sellers more easily.

you hit the nail on the head, creating the site is nothing to do...however marketing and promo is where the plot thickens.

To be frank... Site costs just 100 to 200$ if you are getting it done by indains and may be 1000-5000$ if you get it done locally..

All you put money is just in promoting it.. not designing it... So you need those millions in there... ;)

This is your answer 35 billions. This is of course if you want to have website with millions of byers coming every day. It will be much more easier, cheaper and faster to buy it than to build new website. Ebay became popular because 10 years ago it was something new and unique and didn't have any competition. If you start now you must compete not only with ebay bit a bunch of other companies with big pockets. If Ebay sees a dangerous competitor they can simply reduce fees and start massive marketing campaign just to destroy you.
 
yeah site $10k.....marketing/brand recognition about $100M+ p.a. Good luck.
 
I would say at least $500 million to seriously start competing. About $40 to $60 million to setup a real site and infrastructure to handle the type of volume eBay handles, and another $450 million for payroll, marketing, advertising, customer service, and cost of operations. I think it's almost impossible for any one person to compete with eBay. The only way to create some competition is for a company like Google, Microsoft, or Amazon to enter that business.
 
lol 40-60 million, makes the 9% they take off u , look so small lol.

set up ur own site, and promote ur product , less site fees and promo fees. off that have swap shop style section for others to do as ur doing for a fee. and build from it.

Script - there are free, but you can hire a guy to code it a lot better, do changes to the script.

advertising - depends, if you want it to be as big as ebay, you gotta own a bank, not a bank account.


maybe it would be better if you would only be targetting 1 kind of items.
 
A $10 domain, free scripts, and free hosting will only get you in competition with your high school buddies. This guy wants to compete with eBay. We're talking about a global system that can handle tens of millions of dollars worth of transactions per day and at least several million concurrent users at any given time. Not to mention their 18,000 employees. eBay is not run off of free scripts. It's run on highly sophisticated applications, databases, and analysis systems installed on top of clusters upon clusters of at least 30,000 servers dispersed across the world. Unless you come up with a billion dollar idea that revolutionizes the online auction world, or unless you get one of the big players like Google or Amazon to compete with eBay, you can't beat them.
 
Agreed. Nobody is gonna take ebay down any time soon. just like nobody is going to take facebook down anytime soon
