how much to charge for SEO?

Hello

I know someone who sells men's clothing on his website. He has never done SEO and wants to hire me.

He has asked for a price quote and I really don't know how much I should say. I have checked keywords like "mens clothing store" "mens suits online" "buy mens tuxedo online" and these seem extremely competitive. Am I right that these keywords are extremely competitive?
And I think the search volume is not very much. So I am not sure how an online clothing store like this could invest in SEO.

is my logic wrong?
How much should I charge?

Mens clothing store should cost something around $1 million to rank.
 
I'm in the clothing niche and it pays well. It's difficult but the rewards are there. Depends on how good you are at SEO. Give him some options, ie band 1 $1000 band 2 $750 band 3 $500 or something like that. See what he goes for. Tell him after he chooses that he can upgrade whenever he wants.
 
It's clear from your post that you are out of your depth, and have no idea what you're doing.

If I were you, I'd begin with taking a close look at the types of clothing he sells and his target demographic. From there you should be able to do some solid keyword research. If you want to do this long term be upfront about everything, if there's little traffic, then tell him that. Don't look upon that as a bad point, extra traffic is still traffic and as long as it's targeted, it should convert well for him.
 
What are you offering? Links, Audits? Some seo's will simply build a list of all the competitors spammy backlinks and then ping them to reindex/make sure their indexed to sink competitors sites, thus raising the rank of your client without costing you much if anything. The client won't cancel your service as long as they see their rank has risen as they won't want to lose their new rank ;)

I want to offer a price that is high enough so I don't feel ripped off, but low enough so they can afford it.
so it can't be $1 because although they can afford it, I won't make any money
and it can't be $100,000 because although it's great for me, they can't afford it.
And I want to offer value so they feel like they are getting a good bang for their buck.

If you do your research and pitch it correctly, they wont be able to 'not afford it'. It doesn't cost, it pays!
 
Every company is willing to pay $XXX - $X,XXX/month, you just need to do your research on them, get all the info you can to come up with a nice plan and a quote that makes sense. Take the time to write out a detailed proposal.

Yes, you're completely off track here... The question should be what YOU could possible offer his business, which going by your questions is probably nothing...

Why don't you tell us? You're trying to sell yourself as a SEO expert to this guy, but ask US if the keywords are competitive?



I don't mean to be rude here, but you don't seem to know what you're doing at all. You're clearly out of your comfort zone and the poor sap will end up paying you money for nothing.
 
Do your keyword research and competitor analysis. And ask yourself a question, "Do you know what SEO strategies are you going to provide to your client? Do you think you can rank your client's website?
