how much should i pay odesk contractor? you decide

Pay him nothing. However you should tell him immediately if this is what you're going to do. If you want to hang on and wait, and he provides you with what was asked, then pay him in full.

This is business. In business if you say you are going to do something, you do it.

However as a matter of integrity, if you don't pay him anything, you shouldn't accept or use any material he provided you.

You've got a massive chip on your shoulders and that's what makes you a chav. I can read you like an open book and I know your type.

You started off poor from an under privileged background and you think the way to get somewhere in life is through being a hard-man, being aggressive, fuck everyone else type attitude.

You offer to send me your address in private because you believe you're a hard-man and have that bravado. The biggest gangsters in the world are often locked in their mansions with dozens of bodyguards because of fear. There's nothing cool about being a hard-man. That path only leads to misery. There's always someone harder/crazier/luckier out there than you. It's a futile existence.

Why would you tell someone offering you a 500/week(which is a great wage) to go fuck themselves? You really are an asshole. Someone offers you a well-paid job and you respond by telling them to go fuck themselves and you think you're not a chav? Trust me, people with money cringe at your type in this country.

Basically because I disagreed with you, you immediately called me 'little boy'. A 400k house, a 50k car and renting a few rooms does not make you wealthy. You've done well for yourself, sure, but your problem is that you have such a massive massive chip. You think because you've got a few quid that you have a right to screw anyone else. That's not how you get ahead in business. The type of people that act like that are often only worth 100k-1mil.

Someone like say Alan Sugar is 'ruthless', but not in the way you think he is. He'll ruthlessly pursue a good deal and he won't be pushed around, but he certainly wouldn't act like a hooligan and screw people like you clearly do. You've basically missed the entire point with the contractor. It's YOUR responsibility to pick someone right to do the job and unless that person doesn't do as instructed then you have a responsibility to pay them. It's not about morals or doing the right thing, it's about having the correct mindset. If you get angry at some contractor for having bad English and not understanding your instructions as well as taking a few extra hours to complete a job then guess what? You're actually angry at yourself. This whole "fuck everyone else" attitude stems from insecurity.

If you make the mistake of hiring a bad contractor then you learn from it, pay them and part ways amicably. It's for YOUR own good.

Once you hit 5mil come back and we'll talk, but with your current attitude it's unlikely you ever would get anywhere near that. Most of the middle class have 200k-500k houses btw. It isn't anything particularly outstanding and certainly nothing to boast about with a "fuck the world" attitude. The only way to make multi-millions is through the cooperation of other people. We live and operate within a large and complicated economy populated by millions of businesses. You can't act like some cocky wide-boy and expect to build any real wealth because people just won't want to do business with you.

Heck, that's all I originally said. I said based on your comment I would be taking note to NEVER do business with you. It turns out I was spot on in my assessment of you. If the least thing went wrong in a business venture you would rip your partner off with a "fuck 'em" attitude. We live in a highly subjective world, so in a lot of situations someone like you is going to feel like they've been betrayed. If you think a contractor being a few hours late deserves being told to fuck off with no pay then god knows how you'd react to a real problem.

P.S. Driving a brand new 50k car when your net worth is only a few hundred thousand is fucking stupid. Unless it's leased, in which case mentioning the car is irrelevant. It's also unknown whether your property is fully paid off, so mentioning that is potentially irrelevant. Heck, you could be renting it since you only say you 'live' in it.

P.P.S. That's a trick question about the house. If you do own it outright then you have no clue about how to manage finances. No one unless they're worth multi-millions pays for a 400k house outright. You get an interest only mortgage and put the money to work. If you don't own it then you mentioning it is meant to exaggerate your net worth.

P.P.S. PROTIP2: 'alot' isn't a word. It's 2 words, 'a' 'lot'. Did you not learn that before or during your 'masters'? You also didn't learn how to spell "professional" at any point during your degree or business?

P.P.P.S. Please go ahead and 'shut me down'. I'd love to see that one. You're really just embarrassing yourself here. You look like an angry moron throwing a tantrum because he's intellectually out of his depth.

I drive a 62 reg ML worth 50,000 and live in a 400,000 house, I also rent out 10 rooms in a nearby town and I owe that 100% to internet marketing. Want proof? I'm prepared to give you my address in private.

I have a 2.1 masters degree in computer science and have completed some intense projects for some well known construction companies. I was made redundant about 5 years ago and even lost my house because of it. As alot of companies in my trade are outsourcing work to Indian companies to save money. I'm fine with that as I'm now in a position to tell anyone offering me a job for 500 a week to go F*** themselves. I do not like working for other companies and hate the feeling of not knowing if your job is secure or not.

I lost 20,000 on high PR domains earlier this year when Google decided to ban low quality directories, and I brushed it off with a pinch of salt and moved on to bigger and better things, why? because I knew I could.

I'm a 100% gooner and will wear a shirt saying "I 8 SPURS" at a spurs game, does that make me a chav? I wear a shirt and tie everyday and talk like anyone else in my area, do you have a problem with that?

I know from previous experience on this forum and others that I have an intimidating attitude, but that does not mean I'm a bad person, infact I would probably be the first person to buy anyone a drink from this forum. If someone takes me for a fool and expect me to pay them money then they must be crazy, are you a fool? Would you honestly pay someone money to do a job, then they stab you in the back by giving you crap work? Sounds to me like you're an idiot. The OP is an idiot for getting into that position in the first place, he should have done better research. That being said I've been in similar position and sometimes the fault can be your own, it can be that it's just not worth the money for a few $$$ or the stress is not healthy.

I've said it already, the guy that wrote the OP is fairy and feels bad for the person, what a kind soul. Me on the other hand I would tell the person to go F*** himself, if he don't like it, take me to court.

I'm proud of who I am and where I am in life, and I certainly didn't get there by being soft. All I'm doing is giving advice from my experience, if you don't like my opinion then that's tough for you, you have your own, but don't come back at me looking to fight because I assure you I will shut you down you little bitch.

Oh, and I absolutely love the fact that you've created a whole other thread, one that I'll add is against the rules, on being banned from adsense.

You want a new account so you can run a $7.50/day method. I mean really, you're claiming to be worth a few hundred k and you're wasting time with $7.50/day methods? Most people I know, in fact, everyone I know that's worth that kind of money in marketing doesn't waste their time with anything under $200/day.

You talk about scaling it, but you said you were running it for years. It just all sounds like BS to me. You talk the talk.

Ouchies, you should check your previous threads before making big claims. Look what I just found.. :-/

A 3 year plan to $5400/mo made back in Dec 2011. Crikey. Why would someone with a net worth of half a mil be interested in spending their time building up to $5400/mo? I couldn't even cover my rent with that. :-/

I can only be bother to read the first few sentences because its full of rediculous insults. You've attacked me for no reason and honestly I do not appreciate it. I don't care what your problem is with me but I am entitled to my own opinion from my own experiences just like everyone else.

"rediculous"

I've attacked you for no reason? You threatened me with violence and you started calling me 'little boy'. Again. I'm older than you and I'm worth more than you, so this whole 'little boy' stuff as a retaliation is just embarrassing.

Also, it's you who has the problem with my opinion. You blew a gasket because I disagreed with you and said I would never do business with you based on your attitude. It turned out I was spot on. You're the single most aggressive bhw member by a long way I've come across. If you threaten someone on a forum with physical violence for disagreeing with you then I dread to think how you deal with people in real life.

There's only 1 place someone like you is headed and that's prison.

P.S. The reason you can only be 'bothered' to read the first few sentences is a severe lack of concentration. Don't worry, it's a symptom of low intelligence just like violence.

Read up little boy. You started on me for no reason. I will repeat once again for you, I'm entitled to my opinion on this forum.

I tell you what lets agree to disagree on whatever your problem is with me, can you manage that? Somehow I doubt it.

You're a real special case, I'll give you that.

Good luck with the $7.50/day empire. I'm out.

Awww that's so sweet of you little boy. Good luck getting f***ed in the ass by people you hire, and feel free giving them great feedback once they've f****ed you.

Wow, some people crack me up.

Anyway people I quit this forum, mods are too lazy to sort this abusive person out so I'm out of here.

All I ever offered was my professional advice, and all I get is people like this clown.

Is this a joke? He hasn't insulted you anymore than you insulted him...He just made you look like an idiot because you quite simply are one.

You're serious? It's abusive for me to say

"Nice business ethics. I'll take note never to do business with you. Ever. I'm sure many others will also be doing the same.

He did the job so your attitude is extremely harsh. You can't just not pay someone because you deem it's not up to the standards you expected. If someone delivers you a functional product then you pay otherwise you're quite simply a scammer."

But it's perfectly ok for you to threaten to "shut you down you little bitch" ?

You wonder why I say you're a special case? You're advocating scamming a freelancer, so yes, I'm entitled to say your attitude is extremely harsh. What I didn't expect was a barrage of attacks about being 'little boy' and getting 'shut down'.

Just so you know I have your full name and if I get just 1 more threat of violence from you it'll be passed on to the met along with your portfolio of sites and your freelancer profile.

Looks like Manchester United vs some other team.

LET THE FIGHT BEGIN!

Wow, the machismo in this thread!

With that being said, I also agree with others by paying him what you agreed upon. You can leave the feedback if you want, but you did make an agreement, and that agreement should be honored. I would also agree with Deviatus here and say you should chat on skype before hiring someone next time so you can get a better feel for the contractor and their capabilities.

Don't pay him anything. You feel bad because you're a fairy. Find someone else to do it and tell him to F*** Off.

I second Fathom. You didn't set that deadline for sh*ts and giggles did you?

I second Fathom. You didn't set that deadline for sh*ts and giggles did you?

You've got a lot to learn about business if you think you can just not pay contractors if they miss deadlines. It doesn't work like that I'm afraid.

A large proportion of contracts end up going over-deadline. You can't just decide not to pay someone, especially when they're a few HOURS late!

You need an existing agreed-upon clause in the contract that states if the project isn't delivered within the deadline then there's either a penalty fee or the contractor doesn't get paid. Of course no contractor will agree to not getting paid. What's more likely is a penalty for delays and that's how it's done in the real world.

You can't just go around not paying in the real world. Yes you can be a moron online when dealing with some Indian contractors(Who you hired on the cheap in the first place I might add), but when you start doing real business and hiring proper real-world contractors you would end up with a shit-storm if you maintained that attitude. Not only would you get taken to court but word would get around that you don't pay which depending on your industry could be very damaging.

In general real businesses don't behave this way. Business is generally kept very neutral and professional. The sort of people that behave this way are insecure, angry, inexperienced and believe that the world owes them a living. It's your business and you hired the contractor and agreed upon the initial terms so you have to stick to those terms if you want to have any sort of integrity at all.

I the prospect of scamming and telling people to fuck off extremely distasteful.

In regards to the topic, because I've came across this issue myself for things like translations and data scraping... I would pay him. In all honesty, he was probably doing work for other people at the same time he was working for you. Issues such as a video not playing could be easily troubleshooted and a solution could have been found. As the same time, he did finish the project within a decent time frame. When I request someone do work for me that is to be completed within a week, I typically give them 7-10 business days.

If you are someone who believes in "the principle" of the transaction, send him and e-mail and as professionally as possible tell him/her that you weren't fully satisfied with the quality of his work and ask for a reduced amount. He might even say something like "Okay, just pay me half" - and in which case, I'd pay him 80% of the previously agreed price and move on and leave standard feedback and ask the same from him.

let it be a lesson esp for the next deal
set a quantitative progress milestone, deadline and payment terms.
(deadline = ASAP is not quantitative btw)

IMO it is OP fault that OP fail to mention specific terms and etc
and OP fail to check the working capacity of contractor before employing
