how much should i charge for online store?

Hello

This woman says she wants to open a online dog clothing store and she is looking for someone to make the site, but she is on a strict budget.
how much should I charge for an online store? I really have no idea, $100? $500? remember, she is on a strict budget, but i also dont want to get ripped off by saying something ridiculously cheap.
what is the easiest way to make an online store? can i download some script and just install it?

Go High and you can negotiate if she's a tight ass. Then upsell different components, ongoing SEO, social media etc.

she says she is contacting different people so if I say something high, she will just go to the next bidder.
we are both in USA. she is not going to buy seo...what do you mean I have to set up merchant account? Isnt that her responsibility?
I thought I could get a free shopping cart software and just install it?

If its just making it i would charge like 100 dollars. Since you can just use a shopping cart script. But heres what i would do.

I would use Godaddy's Quick Shopping Cart service. It has some nice layouts, and is easy to set up, and all you really need to do is buy a domain, and this. It has monthly charges, but its only like 10 bucks. Heres link

I think she wants me to give her the site ready to use, meaning she doesnt want to do anything.
I am looking for something free, monthly fee is a ripoff.
 
Accurately estimating how long a site will take to create is difficult. I have been burned a few times by not charging enough and it sucks. Make a list of every task you think has to be done and attach a time estimate to each. Multiply by your hourly rate and add 20%.. hopefully you're close.

I'm betting 500 is not enough.

the problem is, I have never done a store. I have done static web pages, but not a store. so i dont have the slightest idea what it takes to make a store. I thought there was a script that i could upload and install.
now before you say "then what the hell are you doing offering this service?" well, I like to get my hands dirty by getting involved in things that i dont know how to do, that's how i learn.

If you don't know how to do it, then you won't do a good job. Learn how to do it then look for clients to build a store for. I'd hate for you to build a site for me and do a bad job. Let someone else do it, or outsource the work...end of story
 
If youre able to set up an open source shopping cart on your own box then you can charge a monthly fee, perhaps letting you charge less up front for the site. Even if you have no experience coding you should be able to set up the store and all of it's products.. The only cart I've used is oscommerce but I'm sure there are others. Youll need to look into the merchant account stuff though as the cart obviously has to interact with it. Good luck!

Ya, i know how to install scripts on sites. You are right, the monthly fee thing is a good idea.

Hi.

Prices are not set by the needs of clients, but calculations of your experience + expenses (incl. time) + profit.

Remember - this is a business - so, you have to make money!!

Include at least 2 weeks of your time in the price (process starts with sales not with signing the contract).

+ the less people want to pay - the more they will ask from you [fact]

omg... are you sure you want to offer this service? ... do you realize that your client will want custom built landing page?
 
ok.. here is the thing you have to do.

1) explain your client that it is impossible to run an online shop without some investment in custom design, online and offline marketing as well as serious seo (of course) => it all costs money. explain that without these steps he/she will just loose loads time and the money invested.
2) your client has to start his/her online business experience in ebay - once he/she will be confident that it is possible to make DECENT money online - the next step is his/her own online shop (keeping the ebay business as well).
.. what you can help - design ebay sales page (you can charge $100).

-> talk with your client, explain how online sales work, what it takes to be successful in this world and your client will respect you forever (+ will pay decent price for your services).
