How much should I care about "relevancy" when building backlinks?

Hey guys,

I have a wedding photography website and I've been grinding all week building links on any site I can get a ******** backlink from.
Some are relevant to my wedding niche, some have no relation at all.

All with high 40+ DA and PA and spam score lower than 20.

But I'm wondering, would getting backlinks from nonrelevant sites hurt my money site?

Thank you

Not necessarily hurt, but you should try to get relevant links when possible. Best case that the site is very close to your niche and the article is as well, that's the most relevant link you can get. But in real life it's most likely going to be some broader relation to the other website (if any) but the article that you publish there will be about your niche thus still providing relevance. Relevance can be on a website level, page level or worst case - only anchor level.

I've only ever focused on relevant links when building as you get enough random crap pointing to you over time anyway!

Depends on what the links are for I guess. By wedding photographer I assume you are the photographer and you want to increase ranking for your service based site rather than it being an information based site?

Id start with local seo and if needs be create local little landing pages for the towns or cities around you they are going to be the easiest to rank without any effort I don't think id bother with the term "wedding photographer" id only be focusing on local results and upwards of a (whatever distance you are prepared to travel) and go from there.

So then id try and get some press articles in local paper, look for local directories and so on.

Also make sure your landing pages and your site is spot on for onsite seo when it comes to the local search results.

IF you wanted to go broad and actually target "wedding photography" if you do not have a blog already Id start with information posts some ideas off the top of my head:

- Make the photoshoot go smooth (so if its a big wedding have someone in advance who is to run around and get friends, relatives etc)

- How to pick a photographer

- Modern vs Traditional styles etc

After that id start by branching out then into some "wedding fails" or anything you can find where you can share a laugh and get some social sharing going and even build up posts around that again.

Although to get anywhere with it I think your going to have to be a mix of "photo fails / bombs" and "wedding photography info" posts thats how your going to do it for the broad search BUT unless your talented and have a name out there already I doubt anyone is going to search for a wedding photographer without including a town or place they want to get married.

YOUR other option is to start contacting venues and asking if they would like to partnership as part of the package they offer you could work out some kind of discount fee or they up-sell your service and keep whatever else on top.

Bro your 80% backlinks should be relevant. And it's right that google give importance to relevant links.

It's also important to keep the relevance of backlinks in perspective. An effective link building campaign's ultimate goal is not only to create buzz for your products; it's to build search authority and relevance for your site.

For better SEO and to make your site looks natural, Backlinks have to be related to your site. So try to add the backlinks from the relevant authority sites.

It won't hurt to have some few “not relevant” links. But the majority of your backlinks should come from not only relevant sites but also the anchor text should be relevant to your niche. Not exactly similar but slightly related to your niche, or should be supporting/dependent niches.

It will depend on google mood. Better to focus on the relevant links

The relevancy plays a major role in google so It must to be consider.

Relevancy is more important than high number of irrelevant site.
Too much irrelevant referring site can't get result that you want organically.

But it has to be a mixed bag and there are certain niches where it is difficult to find relevant links and having too many relevant links in those niches can be again a red flag

I am going to disagree to relevant links. I will say why.

You have a wedding photography website and you get a link from a gadget site promoting allsorts. On the same page from the gadget site are links to dog collars, chain saws, photo frames, and backpacks.

If you get a link from the photo frame part is it relevent or not, because the same page contains links to the products on the website, and is not specifically about weddings.

Even now I build links from non revelent sites and see the money site start to rank.

Simple test it yourself on a low competition website and see what google does.

Also if google says links should be from relevant sites, guess what, I have learnt to test it myself and mostly do the opposite.

The day I pay attention to what google says is the day I will give up SEO.

i want to piggy back from this. i have seen much better serp ranking, when I get a backlink from a homepage of a non-relevant site, vs from an inner blog post that is 100% relevant.

Building relevant back links is very important .You should decide relevant backlinks according to your product or services.

Doesn't have to be always relevant but best to get more relevant links.
Even in case of non-relevant links, you can link your niche and their niche and write an article with a backlink to get more relevancy.

100% on relevancy!

This only help you to bring targeted traffic & better sales.

I suggest you to build links related to your niches!

My personal opinion, and what I do in my case, is to build a link only if is relevant. I don't care that a website is having 500000M DA, if it's not relevant for my niche, I don't want a link. It might not hurt at the moment, but on the long term, I don't think it's the way to go.
