How much RAM does linux server consume

So far, I have seen ~250MB of RAM usage in idle state. What are your experiences with this guys?

I intend to run a reverse proxy on a 1 core, 512 MB RAM machine.

it based on your distro which linux operating system you are using , ubuntun need minimum 1GB, alma need 512 MB, cloudlinux redhat and centos can run minimum 512MB

My ubuntu 22.04 distro is running ~250MB idle. Picking up older distros might decrease the ram usage I think.
 
If you use a lightweight desktop environment like MATE over the default GNOME or KDE most Linux distros (even the heavier ones) runs smoothly on 512mb ram.
 
By itself, it shouldn’t be more than 300mb. Running reverse proxy on a 512mb vps won’t be that smooth if you get concurrent visitors. I recommend atleast 1gb, if not more.

I am yet to reach this level to understand. One day, it will make sense. Lol.

Just try and adjust. This is why having a vps with flexible hardware is game changing. Modify the hardware, restart server and bam, you just scaled up. digital ocean and aws ec2 enable this.
 
New updates of OS's always need more and more RAM of the end. :(

There is no need to switch to older/ outdated distros/software, it would worsen your security standpoint greatly. If you want to decrease your idle RAM usage, rather try using lightweight distributions with a small footprint like debian and run only necessary and lightweight software. There is also quite a difference between different reverse proxy software in terms of RAM usage.

Do you plan to run squid proxy?
How many users will connect?
How much traffic?

512MB is too less if you run squid proxy with 100's of users.

In 250 mb, machines can run. But I think 512 mb should be the bare minimum. Even many shared hosting services who shares these data with the users, will often show that they are providing 512 mb. Now if shared hostings are giving it then to run a complete setup you must have it has minimum.
 
Traffic makes the difference in your case. It also depends on the speed of CPU core(s). I would say that 1 g should be enough.
 
Id use Debian or almalinux. Stable distros very reliable. And just depends how Many people connecting you will bottleneck at 10isb concurrent connections for dynamic site and probably crash with only 500mb . Better question tho is why are you setting up a reverse proxy? Load balancing or just putting infront of shared host or? What's the goal
