I guy I work with every now and then has offered to sell me a 2 million email list; it is actually 2 lists - a 1 mil list of individuals and a 1 mil list of businesses. I can purchase both or just one. He wants me to make him an offer but I have never used email lists before...can you give me a ballpark figure of what they might be worth? Thank you :)

It is impossible to say now. Try to send out an email promoting something, targeted to the audience and see how much you make from that. This should give you some perspective about the email list quality. If you post resulting data here (open rate, CTR, conversion rate) I'm sure people will be able to tell you the price more accurately.

Asked him if he is willing to sell 10k for now and he said yes but he still wants me to mention a price first...

Depends on if they are targeted, or just random masses. If it is keyword specific targeting, I would go as high as $400. If it isn't, I'd go as low as a few cents.....catch my drift?

It completely depends on how fresh are the leads, location, if the list has been sold multiple times, bounce mails and more importantly has it been an opt-in lead or a scraped off lead.
1 million targeted opt-in leads might cost a few thousands while not the same for scraped off ones.

You need a ton more information to be able to answer that questions. For example where was the data collected. Opt-in data is a lot more valuable than scraped data and a list of buyers is even more valuable than opt-in data. Then you can go into more specific information such as age of the list and how many times it has been mailed etc. The best way is to test it with a small email blast, but still, a lot more information is needed to put a price tag on the list.

As mentioned before, it totally depends.
If these guys are high responsive, targetted and opt in this list can be worth a fortune.
If it's some scraped crap, it's worth nothing.

I see, thank you very much I appreciate it. I'll see what I can sort out with him and report back. Since I don't have any experience in emailing, I'd be willing to give it to one of you guys and you can email them whatever you like (with your affiliate links etc); I'd just want the statistics. Anyway, will report back.

That is a question only you can answer determining the value, as there is different variables that effect the price, and as others have said above, you will need more information, such as industry specific, are they buyers? is so was it within 3months? repeat buyers? etc

could be worth $x.xxx and could be worth $0 .

You need to take a sample and check them if they were filtered, how high the bounce rate is,how responive that list is ,which country etc.....

People are selling 200 million email lists for $50 which are worth $0 cause you wont get a single click.
Without testing a sample its impossible to say the value

Run a solo ad on that list or JV with the list owner and run your ad. Once completed, post the results here.

2MM...hmmm you should ask him when the last time he ran it through an email verifier first. You want to make sure you don't get a lot of bouncebacks then screw yourself.

Also, you should ask for a sample because if he truly has 2MM, then he's got plenty to spare.

Yeah people read emails, I read mine daily. Every once in a while I find something useful or something that I can send to my list. I have an email dedicated to newsletters just to see whats going on around me so I don't miss anything :).

Also if you send emails out, you would be surprised on how a good list interacts with it.

noone would sell a 2 millions opt in list anyway... probably just scrap! in both ways

Ok so after some back-and-forth discussion, he has agreed to send me a 10K list for free so that I can do a test swipe on it.

Here's where I need some help: I'd like to give this list to an experienced email marketer. You send them an email with an offer of your choice with your affiliate links, and all I want in return is the stats (open rates, bounces, clicks, and actions).

Send me a PM if you are interested.

P.S. the only info I have on this list is that they are US emails
