How much internal linking is too much for Google ?

I see people recommending to do internal linking between the articles on sites. But is there a limit to it. I mean any demerit if I overdo it ?

Just do it naturally, an exact number depends on the length of content and how it fits. Make use of sidebars, and link banks.

Many authority sites are doing internal linking heavily. Just take a look on Wikipedia. Sometimes there are 30 internal links on a 1000 word article.

I would recommend not to limit it on a number, but to actually limit it to whether it is really making sense to set the link. Do not randomly set links to articles which are in the same topic.

For example:

When you have a post about the best playstation games, don't set a link to the best sports cars. But if you have a post about the best playstation games, you can set internal link to specific playstation games or to the best xbox games.

I usually do 2-3 in 1000 words + 1 additional as "Also read: Title of other article"
 
Agree to what @nakamura mentions. Topical relevancy is most important and Wikipedia is a great example of a high authority website where internal links are placed as much as its relevant. They just have that many because they are an encyclopedia so there is relevancy in many topics.

i agree with this, th epoint is your link should be natural, not forced.
 
It is important to understand that internal linking allows you to control the link juice and point the search engines’ crawlers to where you want them. Therefore, it is necessary to work on the website’s structure, breadcrumbs, sitewide links and contextual links, etc. The internal linking should be, before anything else, convenient for the user.
 
If you interlink topical relevant, useful to the user and you do it naturally, then I don't think there is any specific limit as many big sites are doing it.
