How much does description SEO and hashtags matter?

The description is a MUST have. It allows YouTube to know what your content is about. Hashtags are optional and are mainly used for your content to be followed and made viral.

Description and hashtags dont move the needle much. Title thumbnail and retention matter way more.

If people watch long and click your next video you grow.

I used to spend hours on SEO for my beat channel and saw zero growth. I finally stopped using those generic tools and just started looking at what the youtube search bar auto-filled. The views actually started coming in because I was targeting what people actually type. Description is good for the first few lines, but the retention on the music is what makes or breaks you. Don't stress the hashtags, they've never done much for me.

On YouTube in 2026, description SEO and hashtags matter, but not as much as most people think, because content is important.
