How much do you charge for a website made from a Wordpress theme?

Need to make a website for a real estate firm that's opening up.

-Using an already made Wordpress theme (not a custom one)
-Going to be about 10-15 pages
-They have logo made
-Probably spend about $20-$30 only on stock images
-They will provide most of the writing
-Need to incorporate IDX system (the map/search system that shows homes available. Never did this before and not sure how complicated it will be)

What would you charge for something like this? Please vote in the poll.

It would depend on your location and efforts. Hard to make an estimate without knowing how good your work is and how much effort you need to put into this. Personally, I would provide quotes on daily or weekly basis.

$3,000 is less than one sale for the agency.

Get a graphic designer onboard, present a great proposition and you are up to $10k minimum.

It's not a custom theme. It's going to be a Wordpress theme that already exists. And what exactly do I have to code? It's mostly widget/plugin based

And the price depends on where your from people in USA charge like 3K for simple 5 pages site and people in India charge 100$ for 5 pages site ( Based on the people i have seen and worked with ). it all depends on where your client is from and how good your with your coding skills of course customizing of existing theme dont take much time and logo can be done witin $30 - $50 i would say 2K for the website sounds good to me

I reccomend Themeforest Openhouse Theme for real estate it already has that map function OP mentioned.

How do you figure?

I'm making the site myself. Domain + hosting for a year will cost around $50 bucks. Wordpress theme if I use one I don't already have is another $50. Buy some stock graphics another $20-30. I don't see any other costs.

It's very simple to figure it out yourself. Simply solve this equation to get the rough estimate.



He simply posted how much he would charge/will expect to pay if he hired someone to build the site. If you're making the site yourself, then there won't be any other expenses incurred other than paying for domain,hosting and stock images.

I'd say about 1k if they are giving you most of the content. It really depends on what you think their budget is, if you know you can adjust accordingly. Check out dsIDxpress plugin for wordpress to add IDX. Also if you aren't set on using a particular theme, check out agent press on genesis. pretty simple to set up a real estate site with that. However dsIDxpress has a monthly fee of like 30 bucks and a set up of around 100, so advise them it will be an ongoing cost for subscription. I've worked on a couple realtor sites before and they don't seem to mind the $30/mth for updated listing info.

I'll say between 400-600. But if you are making the site yourself why asking about the price? I dont feel you...

Everybody is going to give you a different estimate. You need to figure it out for yourself.

Ask yourself, how long will it take you? You can break it down - first page always takes the longest. Depending on the complexity, your skill, and whether or not you need to design / pay a designer, this could be anywhere from 2 to 20 hours of work. Pages after that, if they are the same template, probably won't take you more than 30 minutes to an hour per page.

Once you've figured out your hours, multiply by how much, at minimum (not maximum), you would want to make per hour and add your costs.

Now, let's say you've figured the site will take you 40 hours of work and you want to be paid at least $15 (for reference btw, my minimum would probably be $40 per hour) that means you're at $600. Plus, you had to pay a designer, for example, maybe $100. So the minimum you will accept for this is $700.

Next, you need to ask yourself what kind of company you are working for and what they can / are expecting to pay. If you're making a site for a local band or your neighborhood laundry store, you're probably not going to be able to raise the price much from your minimum. If you're looking at a big B2B corporation with funding etc, then they can easily be expecting to pay many multiples of your minimum price. Make a good guess at the upper end of what they're willing to pay and start negotiating from there.

A simple way-out for you as a newbie in this field would be to count estimated hours required to do the completed job multiplied by your hourly rate.

What would you charge hourly, $10/hr, $25/hr, whatever...
How long do you think the job would take to complete? make it a fair estimate, for example: 7 days (times 5 hours daily)? So, it's 35 work hours minimum...

So 25x35= $875 or 10x35=$350

This would help you in deciding what the worth of creating the site is from your point of view...

Add overheads... costs to be incurred, those images costs, your margins, etc., etc., etc.

There are many complex things to add, but the above should be a good example for you to come to a basic and fair conclusion.

Of course, web designers and visualizers do not work like that, but it should at least set you a step forward. You can ignore the customer's locality for the time being, because it's you who is learning. Later you can charge a bomb, and still will get paid without any questions, if you so deserve at that time!

You will then learn, over the time, what those figures should contain.

Sounded like he was telling me how much it would cost ME to build the site. But I get it now

I usually bundle websites with hosting, backups, maintenance, support and email for around $1,000 to $2,000 per year - been doing so for 13 years.

I would propose to estimate the hours you think you need for doing the work, add more hours to be on the safe side and then hours multiplied with your hourly rate = amount you should charge. When doing that this way you and your client are treated fair.

@jeanlance, i agree with you dude.. the rates will be completely based upon the location and for the people whom you work with ..!
