How much do thumbnails really affect views?

I think thumbnails can have a big impact on getting the initial click, but a strong CTR alone won't guarantee reach. I'd test a few thumbnail variations while also improving the content, retention, and overall viewer experience.

Sometimes a video has a solid CTR but still doesn't get much reach. do you spend more time testing thumbnails or focus mainly on the content itself?
thumbnails are basically the gateway to your videos, a viewer doesn't know how your video is going to be and they judge it by looking at the thumbnail first, its literally the first and most crucial factor that determines the clicks, retention comes later.
Do not think of creating original thumbnails and wasting your time, you can do that if it works, but the smartest strategy is by just copying the thumbnail style of your competitors who are getting high views.

I’d check the content first, coz a good ctr wont help much if retention and viewer satisfaction arent strong enough to get more reach.
Right. A high CTR will just get them to your video, but the low retention rate will make the algorithm understand that the thumbnail lied. If your viewer duration plummets like that, impressions won’t do well no matter how good the bait.

I will focus on both factors, as each is important. However, for a new channel that doesn't yet have much traffic, it is better to prioritize the thumbnail, as it helps attract passing viewers.
