The cost will be variable up to the extension you like to buy, .info is cheap (for the first year only) others will be cost more. But no one make allot of money just cuz he have a track load of domains, personally I have over 76 but I'm not going to renewal 90% of them.
I second that. You buy a bunch of domains, you may use some, sell or trade some. It adds up over the years.
The trick is, always use a domain for something. Throw an autoblog up or something, don't just let it sit. If you never end up using it, at least it gets indexed and you can sell it before it expires.
If you have a domain sitting there not doing anything, its just a lost investment.
I buy about 10 - 15 new domains per year for reg fee. If I see a real gem that I could find useful and it's for a reasonable price than I usually buy it. So $xxx
