How much have EMDs been effected in the recent updates? Are you guys still buying them over other domain types?

I have quite a few EMDs and some are still doing reasonably well, however, I recently 301'd a hit EMD to a new non-EMD domain, and 3 weeks in, it's doing much better than previously.

Anyone else tried this?

I have a EMD I would like to save if I can I am going to try what you said and see what happens...I have stayed away from the EMD after the last update.

Its a BIG myth that EMD's are the main culprit. Its NOT!

The main thing google is targeting are those sites with thin content (hint: 1 page sites).

So if you have a EMD and you add good content and lots of content then why would they penalize it? Its common sense

So go ahead and buy emds and develop them further so they are not hit later due to bad content

No saying they have been totally targeted, but I'm just wondering if having the EMD really gives you that much advantage these days?

Is it worth the downside of having such a restrictive domain name (ie if you have redhats.com, you can't exactly write about blue hats whilst maintaining the sites integrity...?

Your example is flawed. Previous to this news you wouldn't have targeted the keyword blue hats on redhats.com domain so why should it be relevant in this discussion? Add more content to your EMD domain and it'll have a better chance of ranking and not being viewed as spam. The idea is still the same, you just need more content and a higher quality website now than you did before. Sure if you're looking to add content involving blue hats so that you have more content on the domain that's fine, but you're clearly not targeting a blue hat keyword on a redhat.com domain.

And if you are... I'd question why you got an EMD for a different keyword to begin with.

All I'm really asking is: are EMDs much easier to rank than non EMDs?

I think you still get a slight edge over the competition if you have a well built site with good engaging content and a decent link profile. At least that what I have seen in the past few months with my new sites which are EMD's

No, not really. Any possible edge you might gain, is not enough to make it too hard for any competitor to outrun. Still, depending on your niche EMD might be the best choice, but not because of SEO.

The whole idea behind SEO is telling Google that your site is the most relevant for certain keywords. When you build redhats.com Google knows what your site is about. EMDs still have an advantage in that they tell Google what your site is about. You can overcome that advantage with other domains with a myriad of SEO strategies but that does not negate the advantage.

I think EMDs are just not as easy to rank as before. However, I don't think EMDs where penalised, I think sites with thin content were, and a lot of thin content sites turned out to be EMDs..

I'm literally about to buy a EMD now for a real tier 1 and I'm gonna make sure the content is fresh, unique, and useful, and I'm pretty sure its gonna rank very well :) I'll try to update you in 1-2 months

I think they reduced the semantic weight carried in an EMD. As said, Lbrown, there still is a value in it but thiner.

Never redirected with a 301 but still my EMD ranks #1 in Google also not all EMD'S are hit by the recent update only low quality emd's which lacked content got a hit !

Yeah man go for it. I have an EMD that ranks number 2 for a medium competition keyword. I spent a good amount of time on the content that is up there. It seriously has that "fresh, unique, and useful" content you mentioned. None of my content is spun in any way. I write it all out myself.

My site ranked on the first page right after launch even when content was very very low as in a few pages, i.e. about, contact, etc. and only one "post."

The website basically sat in the same spot, maybe danced around to page 2 a couple times, but after I added the original content that matched up with the keywords in the EMD and it's been sitting at number 2 steady for about 2 months now.
