Well if your niche is more informative such as health you need to write more. Tech articles tend to be shorter and to the point.

That's quite easy. Tech, business, etc. are however topic rather than niche. But let's say that's your niche is selling GPU through affiliate links.
You probably target a few queries such as "cheap nvidia gpu", "titan x" etc.
So to find the average length for your niche, you have to scrap the first 10 results for each of your queries, then user boilerplate to remove the unnecessary content such as navigation menus and compute the average number of words of the remaining content.
If you also use a text analysis tool, you will be able to match the vocabulary of the niche.

Yes, size of the content is needed really, because if you have very thin content on your site and it's not so related to your site, it may lead to the penalty by Google.
