How Many Tags is too many?!

I have a News Portal and i get a lot of visitors but i noticed if i put more tags on a piece of news i get more hits simple, what is my concern how many tags is too many?!
Or how many is the optimal count.

I never do more than 3, but there is no hard rule for this of course. Keep in mind that a new url is created for every tag (if you use Wordpress), so if you use many tags you get many pages with shallow content.

Yes but i have a News Articles which have around 100 - 300 words and i have the "4 W" Who, When, Where and Why? that is at least 4 tags than i need to put a tag of all persons involved so the readers can find the article based on them, i have URL Creation changed to Base so it says for instance "com/?p=912" does WP generate URL for every tag too if this option is changed?

I would like to know that too.
Curently, I'm using an auto-tag plugin, which does around 20-30tags per post. I curently have:
2,178 Posts
29,170 Tags

Is that ok? how about SEO?

3-4 tags is the max I do on a post. However, this may vary from person to person. I don't know any hard and fast rule for this.

I think 5-7 is good

I am also using that in some of my blogs.Seems very fair.Makes about maximum of 10 tags per post,Just to keeping away from being labeled as spamy. And it attracts a lot of organic traffic too.you got to try out your main good keywords as tags.

I use main keywords as tags, but i try to catch more traffic, so i am unsure how search engine sees it.
