How many servers do you need to host your own sites, and what is the best sizes to get for this ?

It depends on a few things:

How many sites
How big are the sites
How much traffic (lots of traffic = more CPU/RAM needed)
How they're made (inefficient code jacks up CPU/RAM requirements)

For just basic stuff, a single small/cheapish server works. But if you have a lot of traffic and/or resource usage, get more RAM than the base plan offers. Get as much as you can afford. More RAM heals many ills.

Of course, if you have a shedload of traffic like Amazon or G, you could be looking at hundreds or even thousands of boxes. However, if your sites were that big you'd know that already (because you'd have been kicked off of shared hosting). So I'd say just one server should be plenty.

So, would you say its cheaper to host through an online company if so which one ?
