How many posts per day?

I have blogs with 3+ posts per day that are ranking quite well, and blogs with 1 post done in 1 year that are ranking steadily in #1.
It depends on the nature of the site.
If it is merely informative, 1 article may be enough. If it is a news site, of course that 1 article is not enough.

Ok, imagine that your competition are just classifieds websites and static webpages. I have one wp blog, so 1 post per day may be enough.

Number of blog posts per day has nothing to do with ranking. You can rank number one with a blog with a single post. Pretty much the only thing that counts is your backlinks.
The only thing that frequent posting helps to achieve is regular spidering of your site for new material - but getting sufficient or fresh backlinks does the same thing.

On my niche sites, I try to post once a week and keep that schedule throughout the year. It depends largely on the nature of the site. Keep it a regular activity. I have one site that has seven articles which reveal everything there is to know about the niche. A larger site may be beneficial for site traffic, recognition and Serps rankings but other factors play a more important role. Still, if you crank out thousands of posts per day like ehow and Demand Media do you are surely benefiting highly from internal links.
