So I have been building website for a log time for a company and am wanting to start to work on my own. :)

This is my plan! (How does it sound?)

Step 1: Build a few site (How ever many it takes) to bring in some income that can cover most bills.

Step 1.1: Learning to build a Article Directory so I can put a few out. My first on is Our-News-Now0com and well its off to a slow start I know it will take time.

Step 1.2: Build a few niche sites, and I have a few in mind.

Step 1.3: Learn other ways to making money with site.


Step 2: Find a good spot and become better at finding normal clients to start making custom sites.

So any pointers would be great!
And I just want to know home many people can really do it.

I suggest point 1.a be find/buy a copy of site points web developer kit. It is full of gold in regards to starting your own business
 
It's really hard and can be frustrating work to set up. I would not suggest doing it to quit your day job. Maybe for some side income.. maybe.
 
I think you are putting to much on your plate that will step on each others toes... Personally, I wouldn't make multiple sites at the same time that require SEO to do well, unless I had deep pockets and couple invest the money into out sourcing most of the work. Start with one and when you evolve into managing your time like a pro, realize you have more time to invest into another, then build the second... keep going until you are at your comfort level when it comes to time at work.
 
I started my business two years ago and it is hard work and long long hours. Eventually it will pay off if you treat your customers right and if you have good design and price.

Don't undersell yourself.

Find people to sell for you.

Think outside the box but also copy stuff that works on other people's sites and implement it for more cash flow.

Offer a diverse selection of services but master them.

Don't offer shotty work EVER.

Get referrals along the way. (linked in, video testimonials etc.)

Once you reach a certain thresh hold outsource!

Never give up. Learn everything you can and be the best you can.
 
I was able to quit my day job a while ago because my IM income started consistently raising above my 9-5 income. Now I work about 2 hours per week (if you can even consider it work). I suggest you work hard, sleep little, be determined, and be patient.

What it all boils down to is... How bad do you want it? Is it what you think about when you wake up every day? Is it what you think about when you go to sleep? Is it what you think about when you're at work?

Some people literally start banking really quick. For me, it took about 4 years to finally get 5 to 10 good methods going. All that matters is that you really want it.

NERVER, EVER give up. Keep on doing what you're doing and don't listen to other's negative comments.

I remember when I started out. I told my friends that I'm gonna make money while I sleep. They were all laughing at me.

I bought myself my first home and paid it off with my online income in ONE YEAR!!!

AND I drive a 4x4!!

Also, I still have my 9-5 job

Guess who's laughing now! :D:D:D:D

I work for myself at home, I have been doing IM for about two years, but have a history in web dev going back to 1998, so I guess I had a head start before I started.

I did IM part time with my other job until January, now I earn more in one hour than I used to in a day.

Stick at it, whatever avenue you are exploring, always have a white-hat blog in a nice that you enjoy, a hobby e.t.c... If you keep blogging about your hobby and getting involved in the community now and again, the site will not fail.

I say this because I started off as a black hat, all of a sudden my white hat hobby site exploded, I've made $1020 this week so far from it, and it's only Thursday morning.

I'm taking the white hat avenue at the moment, I feel like an IM vegetarian or something!

I dont plan to quit my day job any time soon, but I want to have some good sites going and a few ways to make money so I can to more design. :) I fully plan on it taking a few years I just wish I would of started a few years ago when I said "I want to work for myself"

But again, thank you! It is really nice to see others making it work!

JohnnyRabbit That is great!! A nice house that is pain in full is 100 times better than any house that will take the rest of your life to pay off!

Nice one mate, i wish i have those. :) it motivates me more to do my best to achieve my goals and to have my own shelter.
 
I second "Hard Working". It is the key, after selecting the right path though. You have to be patient and dedicate your life and time. It takes a good two years though, at least!
If it is possible for you, start building the infra structures before leaving your job.
Also, move to an area that is not expensive to live. Get out of CA or NY if you are there!
 
The plan sounds good but don't forget that every step will take some time (
 
I think a key to working for yourself is knowing where your weak spots are so that you can rally work on that.

For me,
1: Time, I am building a test law site and its killing me I am only getting 20 people a day. But the site only has 20% of the content I plan and has been up for a few weeks.

2: Getting good links, I have a really hard time marketing myself (company/website)
 
i quit my "day job" 3 years ago, nothing but IM since then. Don't give up, things have a way of hooking up as long as you stay in the game ;)
 
At this point, I am starting from scratch and my goal is $50/day. Keeping motivated can be hard, as I've been out of the game for 3-4 years and things have definitely changed a bit... but this forum helps :)
