IRC is a bit dated, a silc is a better choice.

I do miss IRC, but channels I hanged around died years ago, so dunno where its interesting

Why is 'silc' better? I'm pretty sure IRC is still massive and will remain big with enthusiasts.

Why wouldn't it be? It takes quite a lot to kill off a protocol as popular as IRC...

Right, because it has "secure" in the name, it must be better than the other that does not
You do realize that irc supports SSL since ages right? Doesn't get more secure than that.
