How many keywords should i focus on?

I see many people focus on 1000s of keywords, this means that they have to make a hell lot of backlinks for each keyword right? I dont want to blast to mutch and get problems with big G so I want to ask the gurus here...
How many keywords is good to work on?

It depends in part on the tools you have/can use well + the power/number of VPS/dedicated servers you have at your disposal + your own capacity to manage (many or not) campaigns. If you are new to SEO, I suggest to start with a few keywords, get a good VPS and some backlinking tools assuming the content part is already taken cared of. Good luck.
 
Work on atleast 3 but while you backlink them... use lot of web 2.0 anchors such as read more, check out, etc but foucs largely on 3 - 1 main - 2 long tails.
 
I use GSA, have been in the buisness for 5 years, but it is allways nice to hear different inputs, and sometimes we focus so mutch time on other things in the area blackhat that we forget....atleast it is like this for me...
dont use SB anymore only for scraping, have used Xgenseo, and all the bigger tools out there for the past years.
 
Using 6 to 10 keywords (including long tail) and notable number of back links for each keywords would be awesome.. why because, keeping good velocity and great keyword diversity will be looking more natural...

I only target 5 to 10 at a time.But you may target as many as you like but make sure you are creating quality content and backing it up with great link building.My strategy is always traditional,make a list of keywords with high search volume and low competition, choose a few, and start writing content.and worked most of the time.So i like that way.
 
I was thinking on around 20 keywords, since GSA do so mutch work i think its not to mutch and not to little, I am working on high competition keywords aswell... and beside using gsa i create .html pages in my sites, this counts as backlinks as faar as iknow.... and use sitemaps and update them all the time on G

It depends upon lots of factors ( no of back links I want to put for each keywords, my budget , etc etc)...but when ever I start working for a new site...i start with some where around 12-18 keywords..and keep the competition level something like this

2-3 Main keyword (difficult ones )
3-5 Moderate Difficulty level
3-5 Easy to moderate Level
3-5 Easy Keywords with long tail
