How many keywords can you optimize for?

If you have a site, say, howtoplaybanjo.com, and you've optimized it for the phrase 'how to play banjo' and you have high ranking in the serps for that term.

If you decide to expand your site's scope to guitar. Does it compromise your banjo position if you start optimizing for guitar also?

If you change the title of your home page from "How To Play Banjo" to "How to Play Banjo and Guitar" do you lose ranking for the search phrase 'how to play banjo"?

What is the practical limit on how many keywords you can optimize for?

around 5 keywords per page is the maximum. Of course you can rank for long tail terms for a lot of other terms, but if you are to target quite competitive keywords, i do not think that you can rank for more than 5 terms with the same page-think about having your keywords in title, description,etc.. you can t stuff too many terms.

That s purely personal and a little bit of experience. From a point is much easier to rank another site than to stuff your existing site with a lot of other keywords.

Where did you get the 5 keywords from? You can optimize for as many keywords as you like. Its just if your site is about playing banjo and you decide to optimize it for baked apples it is going to be much more difficult.

Instead of stuffing pages with keywords and rearranging titles in order to add more keywords just start building backlinks from guitar resources pointing to your website with "how to play guitar" in the anchor.
