used to have 1 pc and 3laptops. sold them all and now I have a really pocketable laptop which I can just use with 2 large monitors so I don't need to have a loud pc in background.
5years ago you couldn't get a powerful enough laptops but nowadays it makes no sense to own a PC unless you are a gamer.

I really only use on laptop with two monitors. If I need computing power I just spin up a cloud instance. Gaming I just use my PS4.

A lot of people use Windows VPS simply to keep their primary device available for other activities as well. I have a monster sitting in my workspace, so I keep a bunch of virtual machines running in that thing pretty regularly, and I also use a matching specs VPS. Two devices which combined can run almost everything unless special needs projects come up.
In this situation you can just fire up an Amazon AWS instance and create another small VPS there for testing purposes.
The era of the PC is almost if not already over, but they still have their conveniences, and I still prefer a desktop experience over phones, so ... for me 2 devices is plenty, but do keep in mind that inside those two devices combined is the capacity to match up to 15 4GB PC's production. So I use "how ever many I need to use today."

I'm glad at the "hipster" trend of less power(and less power locally)= better especially since its making its way into the business community including IM.
At the 10Gbps and up to 4.3Kw/H it would cost $5,500/month to do colocation but I could do it locally with 10Gbps internet from a specialty internet company for $3,600/month and power where I live would be at the most around $300 if I don't have solar. So $3900 is a much better deal than $5,500 plus no lag of 65ms to 80ms to the data center when RDP'ing.
VPS and Dedi's are good to expand quickly but once you are established its best depending on whats available in you're area to do things in house rather than outsource the processing power.

People nowadays, don't prefer many computers, instead they use VPS to keep their system free for other activities. It gets the work done and doesn't cause any issues in our systems.
I currently have 2 Desktops, 2 Laptops and 5 VPS & Dedi's running 24/7. It get's my job done..

I use only 1 notebook and i just set up 13 trial VPS with Microsoft Azure to mail with iMacros exploiting the test send feature of an online bulk mailing service, sending out ~100k mails per hour, so ~2.5M per day, 100% inbox lol

It's pretty cool from MS, it's a fully functional 30 day trial, it's also highly customizable. They have these D-series VPS servers in 13 regions and let you set up 4 cores in each region. These VPS i just set up, normally cost anywhere between $400-$600/month depending on the region.
You need only two things: a phone number to verify your Azure account and a valid CC with $2 on it, because they put a ~$1 authorization charge on the card and that's it, they won't bill you when the trial expire. So practically you can use ~$6k worth of their stuff for a month for free.
