Let's assume you are building backlinks to a new website. Well, 5–10 backlinks might be just right to start with.

But you should be very careful when building backlinks. You don't want to build spamy backlinks.

In the long run, spamy backlinks will not help your site. On the other hand, good backlinks will build trust and authority to your website, which obviously helps you to rank better in search engines.

There is no certain amount of links per month you should (or shouldn't) build for your site. On average, it's safe to build 40 to 50 backlinks to the homepage and 0 to 100 backlinks to each individual web page.

This is a pretty controversial opinion but for a totally new site I don't really get into the link building phase for several weeks or even a couple of months.
All I do is get my socials set up for syndication, set up analytics, set my domain up on all the dashboards, and write an article every couple of days.
Once I start appearing on pages 3 and 4 for long tails, I'll start building links for non-longtail keywords to their relevant pages.

This is pretty useful as a low-budget low-stress kind of site but I'm not really sure what people are doing for gigantic sites.

Quality matters most!
There are websites, which can rank without many number of backlinks!
But having links from trustworthy sites in a certain interval diversify your site's profile.
IMO, properly planned one quality link per day also matters the most than to dump links on your site!

If you are going for high-quality backlinks then it will take 15 to 20 minutes to create a Backlink. So decide how much time per day you wish to spend. Make sure, while creating backlinks relevancy is followed.

It is recommended to create no more than 1-2 backlinks per day for a newly created website.
