How many backlinks are needed?

Can someone give a guideline how many backlinks a person should build per site? I mean is it 2,000 or 20,000, or 10 times that? or are you just supposed to build them forever until you have millions of them like the top sites.

There has to be an end point to this process - its just too tedious, or expensive.

you need 20k+ if you want to outrank someone who is targeting keyword like- Forex!
But for plain small niche with ~5-10k/searches per day 10backlinks per day from high quality pages in 3-4months will get you in top position
 
I know what they will say: "The more the better" But sometimes I see in search results for quite competitive terms the following situation: ( I check through Market Samurai)
#1 Domain age-0 PR-0 Backlinks-32 (or smth like that - very few), not listed anywhere.
#2,3,4 - authority websites with 10th of thousands backlinks, pr 4-6, very old domains, DMOZ, e.t.c.

What does it mean? Is it a temporary situation? Or this #1 knows some powerful linking strategies (linkfarms, e.t.c) that get him on #1. How is it ever possible with 32 backlinks totally?
 
any idea what it would take to dominate 1page for the keywords : air conditioner, air conditioning, air condition. if you can do it name your price
 
I think the amount of backlinks needed is depends on the keyword too. You can check your competitor backlinks to see the average number. But anyway, sometimes the backlinks is not enough. I know some website that have thousands of backlinks but never make it to the top ten.
 
Go for quality, not quantity! I would rather get 10 backlinks from sites with a higher PR than 100 with PR0-1.

the amount of backlinks you need to build is relative to how competitive your niche/keyword is. some long tail keywords require very little effort to get to the 1st page of google.

Forget it! The competition is too high there. If you take a look pages that are now ranking for that terms have a lot authority. They are PR6 with thousands of backlinks.

For this kind of competition the best is choosing long tail keywords in the adword keyword tool. For example you can rank easier for General air conditioner and it has a lot of searches, just see the first one, it is a PR1 with 22 backlinks and there is not SEO onsite. You can rank for some of these easy keywords and you will get a lot of visits.

If the site you want to check has hundreds of backlinks you can use a tool as WebCompAnalyst (it isn't free) to check it.
 
Few High PR back links are better than thousands of PR0 or PR1 back links.

No. of backlinks will also depend on your competition.

Also the backlinks should be from as many different sites as possible.
 
It mainly depends on the keyword you are targeting and the competition you have there. For a long tail keyword you can sometimes get away with no links whatsover, for a competitive keyword you need more and better links than you best competitor.

As far as the 2nd part, you need to keep building links all the time. There is no stop to this as you never know which site is going to go nofollow or be hammered by google or smth like that. For example, if u have lots of squidoo lenses and give u good links and google decided to pull the plug on squidoo, you can easily loose ur rankings in a day. You need to keep building even if u are dominating the market.

You will know the number of backlinks you need when you hit number 1. Stop procrastinating and get to work!

Pages with PR0 and few backlinks at number 1 are often from authority sites. If there are authority sites floating around in your niche - they frequently dominate electronics niches (amazon) - then maybe you want to find a new niche.
 
I run with a couple hundred a day on white hat sites. Anything blackhat i don't give a F!@# i just go hard and fast and for the quickest buck. Sometimes it last for a while sometimes its shortlived so i do what they do say to do in the financial world . Diversify my portfolio...
 
All I can say is, if your competitor has a good 2-3k backlinks then he/she is pretty much in the same boat as yourself. Trying to figure out how to rank 1st.
