how many backlinks a day?

So I know that doing too many back links in a short period of time can have negative effect on SEO. How many would be recommended to do per day?

Somewhere between 50 and 10k. Hard to say without more info about your site.

How old is it? How many links does it already have? etc.

That many per day is acceptable? Wow... The site isn't even up yet. I just wanted to know before I start. The site is an affiliate site for a popular product.

The pattern of the links is really more important than the number. You do not want to drop a bunch of links and then nothing, what you want to do is ramp the number of links up so that it looks like your site is becoming more popular. What a lot of people do is drop a huge amount of links and then stop. Bad move, but it is not the huge amount that is the problem but the pattern that causes the problem.

OK I found a couple of posts I did earlier on the subject. I am somewhat conservative really. I have done more than this without any issues but it works fairly well for me. The key is a steady increase in links so that Google thinks the love for your site is increasing.

It probably will get you indexed but that does not put any money in your pocket. You need to be on the first page at least to get any amount of traffic.

That is a myth, believe me the most people who are talking about that fact and the prove they have, are people who are doing wildfire linkblasts and even don't know that they doing a kind of oldshool googlebomb-style and that cause a penalty or (manually)removing, but hey that is only my 2cents and i cant prove it either

if u get a whole bunch at once, just dont ping the links therefore google will naturally find them over a period of time and it will appear natural. thats worked for me anyway
