How many articles are enough for an authority site?

Up to a point, yes!

If you could get .govs, .edu, big media outlets all linking to a good piece of content then it certainly would be "authority"

It is possible, yes. The web master just has to make sure that articles are not written just for the sake of writing articles. I have noted that when articles are written for the sake of addressing a problem or a need, there is a ton of potential to gain links over time. Of course, it takes time and if one needs to work around, there are plenty of ways. One page site can become an authority. It is not just about the number of pages. Also think facebook likes, links from the neighborhood etc,.

Note: I just remembered about a 5 page niche site ranking for a very competitive kw [400 million exact results]. It could have even ranked for that kw with just the home page but for some reason, he has expanded it to a few more pages. The web master has been an inspiration to me for a very long time. I do not want to name the web site or the web master here for obvious reasons but just wanted to post it here for anyone who were wondering what an "authority" is.

For a microniche site I am working at (no more than 5500 EKS/month), are there enough 5 articles of 500+ words?

It depends on how tight your niche is. If "cars" is your niche you could easily have several thousand articles and still not have enough. If your niche is a certain brand or even a certain model from a certain year you will need less articles. Cover the topic adequately and you'll have enough.

Agreed; it will depend a lot on the niche and competition, I imagine....

In actuality ... Until you run out of niche topics. You should stay on top of topics that might be trending as well and write, write, write..
