How many anchors should I use?

I used to rank 2nd or 3rd on Google for a specific term when I decided to get nore backlinks for that exact keyword. Thing is, the more backlinks I got the more my site lost some rankings.

I was told that I should use more than 1 keyword.

How many should I use and should I keep using the one that got me that ranking?

Rotation of anchor text is must... Keep 60% times your main keyword in anchor text for which you want ranking then rest keep relevant keywords. Also check from where you getting backlinks... Don't do it on spammy sites.. try to get quality backlinks, also regular update your site... There could be other reasons for loosing ranking may be your competitor is doing better SEO then you, if you want to outrank others then you have to outsmart them.

There are no fix number but keep it low in start and grow it slowly...

check ur competitor's stats and see what they're doing right. Are they using the right keywords? more backlinks than you?

i second that.i use this tool to check that:
http://www.linkdiagnosis.com/

it is better if you keep 50% of total backlinks with the target anchor.And the rest could be longtails.

Should the anchors I use be alot different from each other?

Ex: 2010 NBA champs, basketball playoff winners, LA Lakers Champions
