Ive spent around $700 and about 1 month running gambling ads on facebook. So far I am not profitable, which is to be expected.

How many hours + money do you think someone should expect to spend before becoming profitable?

You will need a few thousand to spend testing what works on ppc ads. There isn't a set amount of time you should expect, and I encourage you to focus on the process not results.

Maybe you can try changing your interests.
You can find other areas where you can get a quicker return with an investment of around 500-700 USD.
You can try producing digital content and dealing with e-social media.

Really depends on so many factors, but if you get the right offer, keywords, geos and there's good demand - you have a winner.
 
If you are on a small budget, stay away from expensive countries and expensive products as they take more ad spend to optimize. The hours are not the problem, it is how much you spend per ad and per campaign and how much tracking data you send back to Facebook so that their algorithm can adjust their internal targeting. You got to test more angles, ads and offers. It is hard to say when to scrape a pipeline and try another one and when to keep trying to optimize. I assume you have set up accurate lead tracking. How many conversion data points have you fed back into their algorithm? How is your landing page? Have you tried several variants to determine what leads to highest ROAS?
 
Although testing ads requires 1-2 times more than $700, you can try changing creative and headline continuously, advertising images also need to appeal to users' gambling psychology to increase conversion rates

You should describe your actions and then we can give you a clear answer as to what you need to do next.

There is no ‘money’ button in life, you have to spend a lot of time and money to get results, but it's up to you how much of these resources you spend to get to your desired goal

I think it will take time and a few thousand to get profit. We should do it following a process. Improve content + image. First, you need to warm up your accounts at about 10-20$. When accounts are active, you can raise the budget gradually. Good luck
