How long should articles be nowdays for good seo?

As said before, focus on the quality and use methods to get the visitors interested in the content. That's the most important if it's too long there is the chance of: tldnr :)

I personally have found that 500 words is a good length for most articles, although I would say the subject matter can often dictate the length of an article. It's not just about what is acceptable to the search engines. It's also about a persons attention span. Very few people seem to have the time or the patience to read beyond a thousand words.

I think the question must be asked differently. You should ask yourself what the cost per result is.
Of course, SEO-wise, a well-written 6k word article is way better than a 500 word one. But what about the involved costs? How much would you need to compile the article? Wouldn't it be better to have 12 500 word articles instead of one with 6k words?

The answer is, as usual, not that clear. You always have to think what you want and optimize your actions according to your goals.
Good luck!

I've found that articles with more than 500 words to be a good amount, I've also wrote 200-300 word articles with good results. I'm assuming the more words the better, given that you don't take away from the quality.

I just started typing up the articles for my site, and the minimum of 500 or even 750 seems does not seem like a large number. I got to 250 and I am not even 3/8 through the first article I am writing.

I wrote a bunch of articles with pen and paper, and typing it onto openoffice right now.
