This question is too vague. If you're trying to rank organically it depends on keyword competition and your knowledge of SEO. It's possible to rank 1st place for low competition keywords with only good on page SEO. More competitive keywords will require more time, effort and probably money in a lot of cases. Tell us more about your niche and we can provide a better answer for you.
Australian domain SEO keyword took us 2 months to get there. #1 position reached only 1 day (almost impossible to beat wikipedia) ... .i.e. must work hard to get results for competitive keyword!
- Form competitive kewords dake sure your domain > 4 months old better >>>6 months
- Regional domain vs international is much easier to promote
- The bigger competition level the longer it takes
- Avoid rapid boost in link mass

There are too many factors that bring you in the top 5 using white hat plus it is not even that easy to successfully use all of the white hat tricks. People take years and years to be on top using white hat tricks because they need human attention and hardwork.
