How long does it take YOU to find a niche?

I keep a running list of ideas/topics I want to try. When I'm ready to build something new I look over the list. These are not usually researched, but more of "hey, I may need to do something on abc sometime" and add it to the list.

My list is pretty general, and of course some of the ideas are better than others. I can take a major idea/topic and drill down through subsets until I find something I want to work.

i use micro niche finder
that tool its great to find good niches

cheers

Don't make it so difficult for yourself. Go to Barnes & Noble, pick up the first magazine you find, look at the cover - probably has 3-5 headlines of articles inside that are all for some kind of niche.

Don't want to leave the house? Go to CB, look at marketplace by popularity. Another set of possible niches.

Oh and that list that 195471 provided - all Money.

It takes me between 5 and 15 minutes, using google keyword tool with the following way:
-Enter a website that generate lots of trafic like ezine
-tick the "exact" correspondance
-Sort by ppc

I really don't do much research. For the most part I build my niches around things that I hear about lately. Hot products, etc. and then just targeted a longer tail variation of that. It pays off about 80% of the time and I really have done no traffic research at all so its quick.

Good niches can often be found in your spam.

- spam in your email
- spam on your blogs
- spam in your forums
etc

If someone is taking the time to spam it, it may be worth looking into.
