How long does it take to learn/setup magento?

I have some magento themes and I only really want them for the nice ecommerce layout not all the shopping cart bells and whistles. So Ive been putting it off since I looked in the files and they were a mass of confusing zips within zips, all different kind of folders I had no idea what was going on.

So how long will it take to learn and setup? Ive been avoiding it cos it seemed rather daunting.

I've been a Magento developer for years, and it definitely has a bit of a learning curve. You'll need to invest at least a few hours in order to understand how to list products and stuff. Luckily theres a lot of support you can find on their forums or other sources.
 
If its anything like a wordpress or other free cmd platforms then should't be that hard. also wanted to get in to other things besides wordpress, too heavy :(
 
I would say it does require plenty of time to learn as its a complex cart system.
 
and adding to the others point ..if you can AVOID it ..DO ..
there are much faster/easier CMS available
but for things like amzon stores etc magento works great

That's the thing I'm wanting to get into Amazon/pinterest atm and magento seems the defacto thing for that so from what you guys are saying seems like it's worth the investment.

Also it might be good for offering services down the line for setup and stuff as it seems very popular and I've seen ad requests for ppl skilled in magento.

Think I'll set a day aside to get going with it.
 
Oh I just realized that it's a seperate platform to wordpess I thought it was just a wordpress plugin :(.

This makes things more complicated because, what about useful plugins like analytics (statcomm) and stuff like that. I have to lose all wordpress plugins for magento don't I. I doubt magento has the plugin support that wordpress has does it? So how do you guys deal with that aspect?
 
If you can't figure it out I highly recommend you avoid it. I used to be a Magento developer and store owner and the system is highly complex and will cost you a fortune. There are a ton of paid plugins for the most basic of features that are needed. You will end up spending $500 or more on plugins before you get a working website.
 
Ah well if money is an issue I definitely wanna avoid it cos I'm really at rock bottom money wise atm.

What do you suggest as a good wordpress replacement? Ofc woocommerce but so far I haven't been able to find decent looking ecommerce themes for it. In the basic wp search there is only like 2 or 3 when I type ecommerce as search.

I'm not even bothered about having a cart and all that junk. I just want the products layout of an ecommerce store and would be fine with it just clicking through to amazon to the product after, so how would I set that up in wp?

Also wouldn't you lose the continuous amazon cookie if they were purchasing the product on your website rather than the amazon store?

Think I'm getting the hang of woocommerce and ecommerce themes now, they just take alot of manual rejigging to get the layouts right.
 
If I'm not wrong, it will be 60 minutes. But in having the knowledge to learn, it is subject to to the person who wants to learn it.
 
For anyone else who's interested Virtue theme is AWESOME and free :) Virtue and woocommerce seem to have me set now.
 
I have been running a Magento site for years and it is a pretty complicated system to learn. Setting up a vanilla installation of Magento isn't extremely difficult if you follow the documentation, but if you're planning on customizing it beyond that you are in for a headache. It uses this xml layout and template system that I find to be very unintuitive. You'll be digging through seemingly hundreds of folders trying to figure out exactly which file does what. Also, the plugins can be quite expensive. It does work well though, and it's not impossible to learn, I've gotten by with it and I'm no expert programmer. But I'd say if WooCommerce does the job then by all means stick with that.
 
Definitely doesn't seem worth the hasstle when you factor in the added price of plugins and such, I am only wanting it for a couple of new small sites that I want to switch to ecommerce so no need at all in that case since wp can what I want with a bit of tweaking and FREE :)
