How long does a dead domain keep its authority after expiration?

I couldn't find any remotely close answer to this and i mean if domain used to have high authority and is expired, with all its content and back links, how long until google decides that this is a goner and by no means it is worth trying to use its past value?

Provided the backlinks are still intact, indefinitely.

Yeah if the links are still alive for a long time. Just try to rebuild the site from google cache or way back machine. It works much better that way.
