You're absolutely right that constant editing causes more harm than good. Tweaking a page every few weeks continually resets Google's re evaluation process.

I does not have any sort of set dead line. If the page is gradually getting more views then i will just leave it be if the views stop growing for weeks at a time i will makes a single change and see what happens after that.
