How Link Building Promotes Websites?

Link Building helps your site move up in the SERP-s. When on-page SEO and of page(aka link building) are done in the right way, your website will show in the 1st page of G., some more efforts and backlinks and fresh unique articles and it should be #1.
Then you benefit all the free traffic from search engines.

Think of a backlink as a "vote" for your website. When you have quality backlinks (e.g. relavent themed sites, sites with high PR, sites with unique content) then Google gives your website more "authority" over your competitors. The more quality backlinks you have the more "authority" you recieve but beware, if you just get random backlinks from spam sites or what not then Google won't like your site very much and won't give credit for those links.
There's two main types of links, One-way and Reciprocal.
Let A = your site and B = linking site
One-way is when site B links to site A
Reciprocal is when site A links to site B and site B links to site A - basically trading links
Obviously you want to get as many one-way links as possible so you won't be helping anyone else
