How is this site ranking?

Don't wish to out the site. But basically they have been able to rank for certain keywords #1-#2 position with minimal backlinks. And they are doing this with higher DA / PA sites on the google SERP.

Confused as to how they are able to do it.

If anyone is interested in helping me have a look, please let me know and I would PM you the site.

You can PM me, but most likely they have:
-More relevant site to the niche than big sites
-Better content(good on page seo, more words)
-May have direct backlink to the page they rank #1

Also bigger sites may not target this keyword, just some phrase is included somewhere in the article
 
I think that the best backlink doesn't depend on quantity but quality. Quality means backlink comes from sites with high DA PA and make sure that they are still in a similar niche to your money site. Google considers it to crawl more queries of your sites and make them up.
 
They may be using PBNs and hiding those as well.
 
Maybe they are strong in On page factor
Like they might update the content frequently.
They might follow the on page guidelines properly.
Strong interlink strategy they follow etc

How can I link my blog?
 
You can check Similarweb for the traffic statistics and analysis free there to get an idea how their performance is, how many backlinks are generated.
 
I have moz premium so I can check the website for you if there is somethink, which eould explain why are they ranking
