I have seen many twitter bots promoting their products by sending out @mentions to thousands of people everyday. A fine example is this twitter user (which is a bot) which sent me few @mentions - http://twitter.com/twitbuddync.

He sends out @mentions to hundreds of people everyday. Can anyone tell me how is this done? What tool is he using? Any free method?

You can send out up to 1000 @ messages per day with the api.

I have coded a tool (available here on bhw) that you can simply put in your twitter info, select a search term, and it will send a prewritten @message to everyone turned up on the search results.
