I have found this when I was checking my competitor's backlinks.

Now, this guy is taking backlinks from some of the major websites such as Forbes, Wikipedia, entrepreneur.com, Yahoo, and many edu domains.

Let me explain How he is linked

For Ex. Forbes is linked to XYZ.com/article and XYZ.com/Article is showing canonical redirect to thisguyssite.com/post1

How is that possible? what type of trick is it?

I can not share the links as I am working on this niche...

can anyone throw some light on it...
 
hacked links or maybe bought links from provider that sells this type of link using rel=canonical. Or maybe your competitor owns both the site and using canonical tag to remove the duplicates in Google eye. Maybe
 
First two option can be possible, the last one is not possible as the other site is a US news site
