How is my competitor ranking so well?

I work for an SEO agency, and this is one of our competitors.

I don't understand how they have such good rankings without much content.

Using Ubersuggest you can say that they have page one rankings for CNC machines and CNC Lathe, however, there's barely any content on the pages they rank for.

Using Moz's Link Explorer, I can see that they've paid for backlinks, probably PBN, but their domain/authority rating is pretty close to my own website.

Does anyone have any advice on how to compete with this?

build authority backlinks to your site may you will see SERP movements
 
in respect to the owner of the website, should not be posted publicly. just my 2c :anyway:
 
There are so many competitors in so many niches, that it's just best practice to keep specifics out of the picture and be general.
Remove names and such, it's also just frowned upon to mention websites by name, especially as competitors, it can come back to bite you, as there are always freelancers looking to get more clients, the really good ones can find everything holding a site back, highlighting that with a target, could be bad for you, as why wouldn't they stop there, they'd reach out to the competitors of the competitors like any good salesman, and audit them as well.

You work at an agency so you see this I'm sure.

As for the site, it's normally either something boneheaded and easy to fix, or its content and CTAs, but ultimately, it normally boils down to the backlink dance.
It's really a matter of looking, checking and doing it again, until you find it, devs have to do code checks to find the missing closer or typo in syntax, so why would a website be any different with SEO.
 
It's a bit of a shit show to post a site your trying to competing against when you WORK for an agency which has been employed by a client.

You could cause your agency to breach some contract rule that you know little about that may have a nondisclosure about them hiring them or anything like that. IF your an employee you have no idea as to what the ins and outs of that agreement could be. You don't know who browses these forums or in what way it could come back to bite you in the ass... just my 2p!

Yeah but there are many competitors in this niche so...no worries
 
Not seeing the bigger picture but then I guess that's what being an employee is all about you don't need to cover your own ass or know much about client relations.

I could take a stab at one or two possible clients just by typing "niche + case study + seo" might bring me to an SEO agency who has done work about a cnc company which could start to narrow down the possibilities of clients, I could then backtrace the companies listed on these sites and compare rankings based on what loose information you provided where they sit now and draw some conclusions, but that's just me then again there are people more sober, more determined and smarter than me.

I'm just trying to point out that anonymity over the internet in this day and age isn't what it used to be.
 
Put a link to their site so they can rank better..

On the topic - try to build authority with quality links to your website and some nice content. The SEO had never changed, just the bot became more clever
