How in hell have they done this?

Out of interest I was searching 'top 10 google' to see what kind of promises seo companies make and came across this site:

With 557,000,000 competitonthis site somehow has the number one spot, and I cannot for the life of me see how.

they haven't got many backinks, no major high pr's according to link diagnosis couple 4 and 3's
domain is only 4 years old
they've got the keywords in the domain, and a litte redirect from a few other keyword rich domains, nothing special
the site is obviously on-page optimised, but again nothing special or what we wouldn't accomplish.
they even use tables!

Thought I was getting the hang of seo, and have had quite a few successful campaigns, only to see a site like this that boggles the mind. Anyone shed some light on this? Unless google's daughter is married to the site owner, I would have thought you'd need a tonne of high PR backlinks to get anywhere near this position.

They're #4 for me.
I can't see how Top 10 Naked People on Google Earth - Google Sightseeing is #1 and #5 is Google's own hottrends.

Well this site has a few hundred links and so do most of the others. I don't see what's so strange about that. And it's got the keyword in the domain which is worth a lot.

Different datacenters, still #1 for me. It was more the huge amount of competition, with comparably low quality backlinks that I found odd. But looking again it's not specific competition, mostly articles.

They have over 300 backlinks with the anchor text specifically "Google Top 10 Ranking". The pages the links are coming from pretty crappy pages and just thrown together. Probably some form of link farm.

Google, even with all the billions they have, would be broke if they tried to bring litgation against every form of spammy link generation on the web. I can't even begin to imagine how many millions (probably billions) of pages are nothing more than crap link farms and scraped content. Lord knows I have generated my share form time to time!

I just looked at there actual site. What a God damn eye sore it is!

I love this paragraph from the site:

So if you type in the Google search "google top 10", you will see that this website has a Google top 10 ranking position. We are currently #1 out of over 400 Million results for that search!. In fact, that is how a lot of our customers find us.

Considering it is now 540,000,000, its been a little bit since they updated. And with there Alexa hovering at 1,000,000 they are not getting the titanic traffic they claim. Though they will probably see a spike after all they Alexa-enabled browser from this crowd to check out there site!

I know right! Proper eyesore..you'd think they'd update it, maybe i'll offer to re-design it an drop some of my own links in there ha.
