How important is EMD in ranking?

    Example:
Lets say I wanted to rank for "Fat Foods". So instead of getting "FatFoods.com", I want to get "PhatClub.com".

Will I have a LOT of trouble ranking for "Fat Foods"?

    Thanks for the help.

P.S. I have read through about ranking with EMDs, but haven't come across a problem with variations in spelling and somewhat related works. Thanks again!

So would it be better to go with "fatfoods.CO" (Yes CO, not COM) than it is to go with "phatclub.com"?

I feel the nonspecific domain is more comforting than the EMD. Any other thoughts?

Since the last panda update Google no longer gives that much love to EMD's. You'll be fine without EMD if your on-site and off-site seo is good ;)

who told you that  , btw you can rank any keyword without EMD but this depends on competition in serps for that keyword , some keywords hard to rank to even you have the EMD and some keywords easy to rank even without EMD ............ always to look to competition for the keyword

That's what I was thinking. I would rather have a creative/welcoming domain name that is somewhat related to the KW, than the KW as the domain name. It just seems more welcoming.

Any other thoughts on my situation? All input is welcome, I just want to see what everyone thinks.

EMDs are nice but I don't think they're worth the trouble if they're not available. I'm working on ranking keywords with a domain that uses my brand name. My brand has part of the keyword of the niche I'm in, which helps to draw people to my link but I don't think it helps with ranking. But either way, I'm not having an incredibly hard time moving my site up, so far.

    Make no importance.
Google is not a word for search engine like searchengine.com
Face and book are not words for a social site like socialnetwork.com
Twitter is not a word for...

    Well, you got the point.
It's not in domain. It's in the marketed idea...

    Depends what your going for..

Branding wise EMD's are usually worthless, I tend to avoid them if I am trying to build a brandeable authority type website.

Now for Micro Niche type sites.. I still love em. I have 1 site that I just built with hardly any content, no backlinks, just a EMD and is crawling great already :y:

Remember SEO is all about crossing your t's and dotting your i's - if there is an opportunity to help a website, even if its 1% serp increase, thats 1% you never had before.

I would skip the EMD and go for a more branded name. I have predicted that google will let loose the might pwnda on EMD's this year.

I don't see Google penalizing a website because of an EMD, it would make no sense - Google wants relevant search results and there are plenty of great relevant websites with exact domains.

It just won't give you the authority it once did anymore.

    Here are my thoughts:
If I have a 2 word KW, then if I get a "semi-branded" domain with just one of the two words then I think I will be ok.

I am trying to get into a competitive niche, but there are many "sub" niches within this niche that can be easily dominated. So instead of trying to go for an EMD, I was thinking of going for "relevant" terms for my domain name.

    Any other thoughts?

P.S. Great replies guys, they give me up for not having an EMD in a competitive niche.

As long as you have your KW in the URL it should be exact match and will help you out in the serp

I still see super shitty EMD sites without backlinks ranking in top 50 for tough keywords. I think google gives some advantage to emds.

I agree with this. However much you may disagree, EMDs are important. Only in some cases they become irrelevant when the competition is very high and everyone is paying large sums or working their a** off to get to the top.

EMDs are good and easy way to rank for low & medium competition keywords. I have said that before and would say it again that if you're building a website for your business then brandable domains are much more better than EMDs.
