How important is domain name?

New to the forum, as well as online marketing/SEO things overall. I plan to create and build up a "lifestyle" type blog with a few different niches on it, so I am wondering how important your website name is in regards to SEO and ranking in Google? Is it a trivial increase in optimization to have a keyword as your domain name, or is it important? I plan to invest a lot of time and effort into the website, creating high quality content, actively searching for guest blog opportunities, creating quality backlinks, and using different social media methods to generate traffic. Would all of this make up for using a non-keyword domain name?

Yes you can use a normal non-keyword domain ;)

After the Google's EMD update, the Exact Match Domains are no longer useful.

So, the safest way to use is the brand name as your domain name.

If you do this, you’re more likely to get brand signals. Hope you know that the brand signals are important for improving SEO.
 
Keywords in domains are not as strong ranking factor as they were years ago.

Creating your own unique domain may be harder to market at first, but in the long run it may become its own trademark.

While adding keywords to the domain help to launch the site but then don't look as good when you grow.
 
Think about a site such as Wirecutter , it's not an EMD but it's a huge, brand website.
 
Nowadays google doesn't give an advantage to keyword domains when it comes to ranking. It could make a slight difference, but ATM the most important stuff are well written content (seo optimised) and your domain backlink profile along with anchor text.
 
Just try your best to make your domain name memorable and a lil brandable

Choosing the domain name is difficult because have to think many factors before choose the domain.
1. Firstly, the niche you would choose and there are some basic terms in choosing domain name.
2. EMD or Brandable domain it is more important one to make a decision.But my suggestion Brandable domain is much better than EMD.
3. Placing your keyword in the domain name is depend on your competition of your keyword in the niche.
 
Go for a short catchy domain if you are building your brand, one which is easily distinguishable from the sea of similar sounding domains these days. It doesn't even have to be a dictionary word.
 
I had the same question as OP, it got answered.

Now Ive got another question for ya'll.
There are a lot of new domain name extensions for example; .accountants, .best, .tips, .blackfriday, .dance, .date, .sexy... list goes on forever and ever.

But what could be achieved with using i.e .tips for a website giving tips or .info for a website giving info about some subject.

Is this worthless by means of SEO and or branding? OR does it has any advantage?

Specialty domains might be a good choice if your customer base and business associates are typical to the domain extension.

But in SEO point of view, there is no real benefit of having a specific extension. You won't rank high because of these extensions.
 
You don't want an exact match domain name. Stay far away. the only EMDs that do well were granfathered in - as of late EMD has almost no effect on ranking. Also, don't use hyphens in your domain name #important; Keep it as short as possible.

Come up with a unique name for you blog, make very sure that no one is using that "brand" name, and use it or a highly relevant variation as your domain.
 
Straight forward domain name can easily help you rank your website on search engine, also it can help you build your brand in the long term. Pick a single, easy to remember domain name. Good luck!
 
Thanks for the answers. Now I can finally start!

As of an side project, I want to open a local business regarding mobile phone/tablet repair. I don't have enough money to start an physical store and pay rent. But I could make a 24/7 repair service. So picking up the phones and repairing them instant or delivering with appointment.

To be findable in google or to have a good brandable name, what do you guys suggest me?

Try to put an unique domain name instead of keyword. In the long run, that will work :)
