How important is article length, really?

Got a question for you guys and gals...

I'm writing an article promoting a Clickbank product. I said all I need to say about it, but it was only 250 words. I'll make up some "testimonials" to get it up to the 500 word mark, but I don't really like this idea because it's just filler; no useful content at all.

So how important is article length to search engines? I always hear people say to make them at least 500 words, but really, what's the scoop on that?

When you write articles to describe a product make it around 600-800 words or higher the more descriptive your article is the more users will understand about the product......

The word count tends to vary. Product descriptions can vary from 100 words to 800 words. Depends upon your product too. I think there is no need to extend the word count if you don't have anything else relevant enough to add in the description. Focus on the quality always because at the end of the day if the reader gets all information through a 250 word article, then writing 800 words would be waste of time. :) Cheers :)

I have seen 200-word articles converting great, it all depends on your authority in that niche/what type of product you promote...

Your Article Should Be Readable.............
Maybe You Shouldn't Add More If You Don't Like To Add...............
 
If you can able to write 500 + words about some X product, then that product name could be used 3 to 4 times repeatedly or with long-tail keywords. but no matters in the case of length articles. It can be considered as diversified anchor texts. However in 150 words or less article, it seems to be over optimized. I hope you can get it.

It depends on what you want to happen because of the article. Just sales? Only as many words as you need to explain the benefits (not features) of the product - how does it solve the buyer's problem? If you're trying to get your site to be stickier and have more clicks, more time on page and more social, SEOMoz recently did research that showed that 1000+ words is the way to go. That's only if that length is full of interesting info, though. 1000 words of "Buy this cuz its cool" won't help you.
 
350-500 is good. But if the product needs a more in depth explanation, then SCREW the word count... Just write till you feel you've said everything that needs to be said. :)
 
I always wrote 600 words minimum (which is still recommended) but I dont think it matters so much now. 250 sounds short but if its a promo for a clickbank product I would be happy to have it short and snappy and sales driven rather than repeating myself for the sake of another 100 words
 
I think the OP meant how does it benefit/harm SEO to write shorter articles, he/she was not talking about conversions.

That being said, I always read and heard that longer articles do better with search engines, but I am not really sure especially that search engines have changed a lot and that most of what we read about E-marketing is crap.

I hope one of these SEO people would tell us more, I am also very interested.
 
Don't just focus on length of article for G's ranking. As you are making CB reviews then make it useful. 300 words of quality information will bring more money than a 1000 words of blah blah.

That is true, but a true high quality article can't be contained to just 300 words that easily. I would try to not focus so much on word counts specifically , but the quality. I would try to keep my articles from 400-700 and just produce top quality , else you would just not be satisfying your visitors and encourage them to come back to your site.
 
Ideally the ratio of HTML And Text is important. Around 500 words articles are cool from every side.
Another important thing is that if you write a large article then you can put a lot of keywords keeping the density in the safe level.
 
400-500 words is the ideal zone from the point of view of versatility. E.g., you may want to re-write the content for submission to article directories, many of whom now require a word length of 400 and above.
 
Lenght of article means a lot, but if article is informatvie it can be a short thou.
 
If your article is informative enough, then you need not worry about the length factor. However, I must add that sometimes, you need to consider it. For example, using a professional/technical language may seem very appealing to you. Yet, understand that a major portion of readers may be laymen. So, it is better to choose easy, understandable language, which would help in increasing word count. Moreover, at times, clipped and to the mark articles seem less informative and readers may just skip over the whole item, thinking there is not enough information for them. So, best thing to do is to keep it of optimum length. 400 words is moderate. 600 is enough. Anything beyond that can be classified as lengthy, unless the topic is such that it demands in-depth information.

Just my 2 cents. :)
