How important are .edu backlinks?

Would someone explain me how important are the .edu backlinks. Do they have more value than web 2.0s, article directories, forum posting, blog commenting and etc.? Is it safe to build 10-15 .edu links per week or my site will be penalized?

edu backlinks are like other backlinks. The difference is in the domain trust!
example:
If you have backlinks from a trusted .com that has in the main domain a PR9, its the same of leave a backlink in an .edu that has PR9 in main domain too
 
edu backlinks are powerfull with tier 2, dont compare them with web 2.0 or articles as they are tier 1.
 
each kind of link building methods play each own function and we should not compare them.
Edu sites give you trusted backlinks since they are high authority domains. As .EDU and .GOV sites have a big trust from search engines and especially from Google. EDU & .GOV link building is widely accepted and proven to provide and pass on a lot of "trust rank" to your target landing pages. Each of these links is worth a lot more link juice than any other standard forum profile keyword link. :) :) :)
 
its important to have some edu links. they give you some trust rank to your site
 
Having some edu backlinks will ensure that your website is crawled more often than usual, because .edu domains are crawled more often. See my point? I always build 50-150 edu backlinks to new domains.

Do you out source the .edu links or do it yourself?
 
Edu and gov links are still quality but considerably less so now they are much easier to get....ie you can buy them on fiverr !!

Your backlink profile should look natural so before you build 50 .edu links to your lol funny pics site ask yourself is that the sort of thing of that should happen ?
 
They are important but it's also or even more important to choose good quality ones. Also, don't add too much of them too fast.
 
Google says that They are just like the other links. But Google also says that they love authority sites. And we all know that .edu bears a good authority. So they are a little valuable I think.
 
.edu backlinks can really boost your site ranking as google consider .edu domain of high authority.
 
Not too much different - if you're buying links on pages which have a gazillion OBL (which is what you'll mostly get when you use tools or most of the providers out there). Think of it as Link Diversity rather than added authority of edu links. Best way to proceed :)
 
If the link is not an authority, it's not of any difference from .com, .net or any domain extension. The reason why so much faith is placed on edu and gov is because there are associated with big authority sites. However, I still advice you get them for diversification purpose.
